Default voltage regulator

Everything is overhauled and the 1940 generator works fine -- but. When I took everything apart I put the regulator on the shelf with some others including a 12 volt and now I don't know how to tell them apart. They all have 3 contacts.

Do I just buy a new one or is there a test? Thanks.

John, is there a name or model number on the regulator? If so, maybe you could do a Google search and see what comes up. Also, I have seen small "12 volt or 6 volt" markings on the backs of some models. I'm sure others here will offer some tips as well. Good luck and hope you locate the right one. Steve.
