ID transmission gears
Looks like 39 or later gears on top with the later synchros. The bottom gears came out of my 36 transmission.
Are they 36 gears? Are the gears inter-changeable with the top ones? |

NOTHING interchanges... Except the ball bearings... And... the case... That is, the whole gearsets could go in either case... Whew!!

The gears in top picture look like '39 to '48 to me and the gears in bottom picture appear to be '36 to '38 (maybe including early '39 std). Charlie ny or Mac Van Pelt are probably two of the most knowledgeable folks here on these early Ford gears.

The cluster, rev idler and 1st and rev slider will interchange. Be very careful however and determine the number of teeth on the big gear of the cluster. The later gear sets came in..shall we say...close ratio and wide ratio. The close ratio had 28 teeth on the cluster and 16 teeth on the input shaft gear. The wide ratio had 29 teeth on the cluster and 15 on the input shaft gear. The wide ratio was introduced after WWII I think but in 70 or so years and many hands you never know what's in a trans. If possible try to keep gear sets together and do your absolute best to not mix after market gears with Ford gears. Jack Evans and I had fine old time with mixed gears sometime back. Charlie ny |

One other item to remember during your overhaul.......take a real hard look at the rear thrust face inside your case ( the face that the cluster gear thrusts against ). Occasionally this face is chewed up to a lesser or greater degree. Even slight roughness can cause you heart aches down the road as the thrust washer will just get torn up running against a messy face. As Fred said yesterday there are lots of good cases out there. Also, the '28-48 parts manual has good charts showing which gears are compatible with what and gear identification information. There are plenty of minor variations to work out. You will need a good light, a striagtedge, and lots of coffee to work through the chart!

Yes...it gets a lot of information together in an organized way. With Ford books, you have to pull together material from several sources.

The 36 gearbox used a one year only 6 tooth spline low/reverse gear slider and matching main shaft. Both low gears in the picture appear to be the 37-50 type with 16 tooth slider splines. I believe the 29/15 gears were introduced in 1941 and were standard issue in v-8 pickups.
