Anti chatter rods 1947 sedan
i climbed under my recently acquired 1947 sedan to do some electrical wiring up front. looking up I see two bolts near the front motor mounts I have not seen before on other similar cars. They are connected to two chatter rods running back to the correct mounting holes used. Is this a normal thing for the 42-48 Fords. I was always under the impression Chatter Rods ran rearward to the frame and not forward. In any event these do not help as the clutch still chatters like mad in forward or reverse. Most likely the motor mounts need changing but I believe this also could be caused by clutch disc being soaked in Automatic Trans fluid, which someone used in this transmission.
thanks for any help on this and Happy New Year to you all Frederic |

Re: Anti chatter rods 1947 sedan
The 42-48 dont need the antichatter rods, its taken care of by the Gearbox mount.
So your rod's are probably added to fix a bad gearbox mount. |

Re: Anti chatter rods 1947 sedan
I agree with Mr 42 I've owned (7) 41s and a 46 ford and several have had chatter rods installed because of bad mounts. Ed

Re: Anti chatter rods 1947 sedan
All 1941 Fords incorporated these anti-chatter rods (as they are commonly termed) as standard equipment. They did in fact run forward and bolted to the front cross member.

Kube, What is the length of the rods used in '41? and could they also be easily added to the '42 to '48 years? I am very familar with the '35-'40 rods but I have a set that are a bit longer than those and I think they may be the '41's. If I can find a picture of them I will post later. Thanks!!

Re: Anti chatter rods 1947 sedan
You can use the 41 rods on 42-48. Finding the special spacers and washer/bolt combo are hard. I have them on my 42 but doubt how good they work.
The 41 units I beleive were put on some of the military models (42) as the GIs complained about chatter. I read this in an article in one of the Ford repair manuals. I nbeleive the kit had a Canadian Ford part #. |

Re: Anti chatter rods 1947 sedan
My '47 chatters something fierce, I grabbed some rods (I believe 41's) and was going to make them fit. Other then the clutch set-up being warped what else might cause this?. Will the trans mount really stop or at least lessen the chatter, as you can tell pulling the trans is not high on my fun meter. .

Re: Anti chatter rods 1947 sedan
I was always told they were add ons, That's what I like about this hobby, I always learn something new every day. I just bought a 41 sedan in November that doesn't have them, and does't appear to need any. It also has a manifold heater that I've never seen on a 41 before. Thanks Ed

yes the gearbox mount on 42-48 takes care of the chatter, if the mount is OK. If you still have chatter then you having trouble with the clutch, and to replace it the easiest way is to remove the gearbox. |

Re: Anti chatter rods 1947 sedan
I had a 48 Merc coupe w-a very severe chatter.Turned out the rear splines on the DS & coupling were worn almost as thin as razor blades & DS roller brg surface was worn down almost 3/32".No wonder it had a1/2 turn play in the wheels! Ive taken many 37-48 RE,s apart & many of them had worn splines.

Re: Anti chatter rods 1947 sedan
'41 anti-chatter rod is 21" from the "flange" to the center of the bolt, 21 7/8" over all. For what its worth, My car chattered like crazy with both rods in place and tight. Had to take off the one on the left side to fit my Fenton headers and the chatter really wasn't worse.
Put in a new clutch with an engine swap and the clutch has no chatter at all (still only one rod ). My guess is if your clutch is bad enough for you to write a post about it, that the rods probably aren't going to help. Last edited by itstom; 01-02-2012 at 10:44 PM. Reason: typo |

Re: Anti chatter rods 1947 sedan
Why do the early Fords have clutch"chatter?" My restored '36 had clutch chatter right from the git go; is it a design flaw?

Re: Anti chatter rods 1947 sedan
I just remembered I took pics of the frame I took the parts off of. I'm going to look at the trans mount, but ultimately the motor/trans has to come out to rebuild the trans, new clutch, new t/o shaft, new clutch arm and rebuild the pedal assy but I have to finish the panel truck first. I'll continue to collect nos parts until then. I just finished putting on the tube shock kit on the front and replacing the sway bar end links.

Re: Anti chatter rods 1947 sedan
The '42 conversion to rods is covered in the Canadian service bulletins...it was a wartime thing. Probably the desert war accelerated failure of the stock mount, which is LOTS of fun to change. The Canadians even supplied all the bits as a kit...
Pilots and several mercs also used the frontwards rods. |

Re: Anti chatter rods 1947 sedan
between 1961-1963 me and friends parted out about 10 `46-`48 fords and mercs most were original one owner 4 dr cars. most had anti chatter rods. we thought they weren`t necessary and we would usually chuck them if reinstalling a motor. so i always thought they were stock at least on canadian 46`-`48 fords and mercs.

Re: Anti chatter rods 1947 sedan
itstom- I too took my left chatter rod off my 1941 to fit Fentons and others on this site acted like I was crazy. They said they wouldn't even run the car like that, but I have had no problems. Should I worry about taking the car on loger trips? I was going to fab one like 19fordy suggested.

All the Canadian 1946 - 1948 Fords and Mercurys that were imported into
New Zealand had Anti Chatter rods. |
