Added a 90-degree oil filter adapter today

Really didn't need to, but saw this available and couldn't resist.

The new (to me) adapter, as bought:


Painted and installed:






Yes - I know there's a bit of oil sitting near the rim of the filter - that's leftover from when I removed the filter when it was mounted horizontally. I ran the engine at a fast idle for a few minutes and didn't see any leaking and plan to take a drive in a bit to try it out some more.

Nice, clean installation. Almost looks like it was installed the day the car was built.

Looks good, I also paint the filter top rim black so it doesn't stand out. But then again, I'm anal.

haha - I thought about doing that, but was too lazy to get the paint out again (not to mention cleaning the filter top also beforehand), but now that I've had some time to think about it - I like having the white top (for a different reason - I figure any oil leaks will be easier to spot - hopefully blatantly obvious against that white background it provides).

Thank you. I like to keep it clean and I believe it make it easier to work on.

Funny story. Some members of our club had our cars in the All Fords Car Show at Knott's Berry Farm a couple of years ago. I had my hood open and this guy was really inspecting my engine.

While we were watching him (from a safe distance) a friend that was in our group asks "You know who that is don't you. I say "I don't have a clue". Friend sez "That's Steve Saleen" (of Saleen Mustang fame).

Maybe he was thinking about what it would take to make it fast, haha

Duke, that is Calyx manifold dressing. Works good but you have to touch it up occasionally. Just rub it on with a rag. https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/p...0298&cat=41946

I use a WIX 51515 filter, already black. Just peal off the sticker and paint the top.

Would you be able to use the 90 with engine pans, it looks lower?

Sorry SDJason, I didn't mean to hijack your thread. A word of caution. In your pictures it appears you used an over abundance of gasket sealer? If that much squeezed out to the outside a like amount also squeezed to the inside and may end up in the oil pan.

I too wonder about the 90 degree adapter with engine pans. I use a shorter filter that might work. Its a high quality Purolator PBL 14670 filter.

Thank you - yeah, I saw that almost immediately after I had installed the replacement timing cover; I thought about redoing it, but also wonder how liable cured permatex is to have bits fall off (I assume that would come with age/deterioration) - it's something I'll have to keep an eye on.

The 90 degree adapter takes the same size filter as the timing cover filter setup: it came with a Motorcraft FL-1A (that's what's currently on it), and a Wix 51515 also fits (I've got one of those) - and I see that ndnchf has successfully used a Purolator PBL 14670.

As for space with an engine pan - mine didn't have those installed when I acquired the car, but I can say that with the Motorcraft FL-1A filter, the end of the filter sits just barely above the rounded edge of where the oil pan curves to underneath.
