Gas Leak
I took my mostly new to me '37 humpback Fordor over to the station to get gas in it for the first time since I bought it. I quit pumping when it showed that I had put in 11.4 gallons. Since the gas gauge was showing about a half tank when I pulled in I thought that might be a problem. The real problem showed up when I got back home and put the car in the garage. I walked around the back of the car and saw gas dripping off the bottom of the car at the left rear corner. The gas is mostly dripping off the frame, but I can see that the tank is damp at trailing edge of the tank.
Is there a vent line coming out of the tank at the top some place? How big of a pain is it to get the tank down out of the frame? Thanks.

Re: Gas Leak
Get a light and take a good look. Joint at fuel filler neck to tank, fuel line connection on front of the tank or sending unit on top when full. G.M.

Re: Gas Leak
Most likely the leak is at the flex connection between the tank and the neck or the gasket at the gas gauge connection, when it rots out it produces a similar leak when the tank is filled and the fuel sloshes around.

Re: Gas Leak
Just had the same problem, mine turned out to be the fuel line at the front of tank, just needed to be tightened. Zeke

Re: Gas Leak
Thanks. I will take a look. I just looked at the car and the drip is slowing down so hopefully it is something that I can fix without pulling the tank.

Re: Gas Leak
Could it be that when you fill the tank all the way to the top gas leaks out between the sending unit and the gasket on the top of the tank and down to the filler neck area?
Check you gas tank sending unit from inside the trunk and see. DO NOT USE A LIGHT BULB DROP LIGHT NEAR YOUR GAS TANK...............BOOM! |

Re: Gas Leak
I checked the sending unit and it is totally dry around that. When I stick my finger around where the fill tube enters the tank it is very wet. I have the tank siphoned out to where it is no longer leaking, but I really want to get this sealed so I can take the car for a long drive.
