Default Insurance Restrictions

I just received the renewal for my antique car insurance, and with the bill is a statement of things to remember:
  • Vehicles listed on this policy must be stored in an enclosed, locked garage when at home and not being driven;
  • Backup transportation, commuting to and from work, errands, shopping, rally and race events, and off road use are prohibited under this policy;
  • No one under the age of 25 may operate the vehicle;
  • Each licensed member of the household must have a primary driving vehicle other than the vehicle listed on this policy.
My insurance is with Grundy, and it is underwritten by Philadelphia Insurance Companies.

Is J C Taylor and Haggerty less restrictive?

It probably has an annual mileage restriction also. I ended up insuring mine through GEIGO. Very reasonable annual premium and they actually encourage you to drive your vehicle as you want (not as primary transportation), with no annual mileage limitation.

Does GEICO insure your car for its actual cash value?

Is J C Taylor and Haggerty less restrictive?

So, pretty much, you can drive it to a car show and back, and that's about it?

Time to consider switching to Hagerty.

Hagerty has some restrictions as well, but not as bad as those!

I tried to get a quote from Grundy and Hagerty both, and they both declined to insure me because of my 18 year old son drives the car. I stayed with Continental and the premium it a couple of hundred a year, and I am not redistricted to anything which is good I drive mine everywhere but car shows or club events.

I just insured with Hagerty and they were pretty much the same restrictions with a 3500 mi annual limit and full replacement value. But they waved the separate car requirement for my wife when I explained we were retired and had had only one car for the last 7 years. I guess they wanted evidence we could live with only one primary car. Bill G

Actually I dropped HAGERTY on my 50 Buck...and will be doing so on my model A,. They have informed me that No longer can I drive to work with the car 3 times a month, go to the store, errands or anything BUT a car show. and no longer can I leave any classic insured with them out in the driveway over night. for a any reason. They are getting much much more strict,. I have my other Model A with State Farm and have no issues at all.

I just insured my Second Model A with Hagerty, (third car on policy) And you can choose your coverage, driving limits etc. If you have a second car on the policy it gets really cheap. To insure my A for $12000, 2000 miles, less than 20 trips to work, no deductible, was $45 per year.

I think you better ask them where that 2000 miles applies to. ME I drive mine approx 8500 miles a year.

I have my 28 Roadster insured with State Farm.....NEVER had any issues and am not restricted on my driving it anywhere. It is insured for the agreed upon value and they have come out twice to take pics and look at the mileage and overall condition. No probs!

Allstate is not the way to go. They decide how much they will pay you for full loss. And quoted $291 for 6 months. Go Hagerty.

I use Geico's antique car insurance subsidiary (don't recall the name). No restrictions on driving, $24K agreed value, $130 per year.

I had great claim service with Geico on another vehicle, so I would expect the same if ever needed on the A. (Knock on wood)

Sounds about right to me. If you drive it like your regular car you are going to have to have insurance like a regular car. Remember the guy that blogged 365 day with an A? He works for Hagarty and could not insure the car with them as it was now his daily driver.

Hmmmm. I just switched to Hagerity from Grundy as Grundy added the restriction that you can not take it shopping, Haggerty does not have that restriction, it does have all the rest, not to work, no one driving under 25..... Maybe it is different by state? They both had a statement that coverage could varry by state, I thought was liability limits, etc..

I have three antiques insured with Hagerty for $286. Nobody ever asked for an odometer reading or where I go. They cannot be my primary vehicle. Very easy to talk to. Ron W

I spoke to Tara of Hagerty yesterday. Regarding age: Driver must have been licensed for 5 years. There is a statement at the end of paraphrased, "vehicle used for club events, collections, club tours, & shows". At the end of the "restrictions" it follows with "and other occasional purposes". There is NO mileage limit, however upon renewal they may ask what the odometer reads. A car that is used ,as restrictions permit, would probably not exceed, let's say, 2500 miles per year. If there is a spike in mileage it will trip a red flag, and Hagerty may question the reason for the usage. The restrictions are very liberal, and if you have a good reason for the mileage they give you a pass. Also it depends on where the vehicle is domiciled. You are bound to drive more in Arizona then in New Jersey , to attend events. Bad answer: I use my car to go to work 3 days a week. That ain't occasional in Hagertys eyes... or any insurance company. I have found Hagerty to be the best in the field. They offer Guaranteed Replacement, not agreed. Check it out on their website.

From the Hagerty website- http://www.hagerty.com/articles-vide...is-limited-use

"Q: Would collector car insurance provide coverage if the vehicle was driven to a shopping mall to run errands or a gym? If the weather is nice and I don't need to carry anything large, bulky, or messy I would drive my collector car instead of my daily vehicle.

A: Our policy is a flexible, limited use policy. We do not, however, limit you to just show and club use. Occasional pleasure driving fits our underwriting guidelines, but our policy is not intended for vehicles regularly driven to work or school or for running errands. We look for usage that is consistent with owning a valuable automobile and the availability of insured regular-use vehicles for daily transportation. While the average mileage generally put on a collector vehicle is approximately 2,000-3,000 miles annually, our policy language does not state a specific mileage limitation.

This limited, flexible use policy includes coverage for pleasure driving. That may mean taking your family out to dinner, out for ice cream or on an enjoyable Sunday cruise, for example. Taking the vehicle once in a blue moon to work to show it off is acceptable as well. We ask that you as the owner of a collectible vehicle make the decisions that are right for your situations. We have not had a problem with our clients abusing the privilege of flexible usage, so we are able to continue without the strict guidelines that some of our competitors may have. We would prefer that you do not take the vehicle to high-risk parking lots, such as the gym or the mall."

There, straight from the horse's mouth. Hagerty RULES. Can we now put this to rest, please?

I have a policy that covers my regular cars, RV's, houses and an umbrella policy. This is billed on an annual basis. However, the carrier will not extend my umbrella coverage to cars insured by Hagerty. Had to drop coverage on a classic truck I drive frequently, added it to my regular policy and incurred an increase of almost $400 a year. There are differences in rates and rules based on which state you live in.

Been with AAA, since 1958, added both of my "A"s, they didn't even SEE the cars, just asked me, "How much do you want to insure them for"?
Cost me a lot, but AAA has ALWAYS treated me FAIR, on any Homeowner's or Car claims. I also have 200 mile towing.

My 29 Sedan is insured with Condon Skelly and I don't have as many restrictions. There is a mileage rest. but you just have to call and tell them the reason for goig over and no problem. My only issue is that being in North Carolina they are not able to write liability. I had to use USAA for that policy.
