storing unused engine
I have a spare model B engine that I have been told it was rebuilt?
Anyway Should I fill with engine oil to the top?? I just don't want it to rust out. |

Re: storing unused engine
Make sure to plug all openings into the engine (intake and exhaust manifolds, water pump opening in the cylinder head if the pump is removed, oil filler tube, spark plug holes, etc.) Keep in a heated space, if at all possible. I don't think that over-filling with oil would be helpful, but it wouldn't hurt. Just remember the overfilled oil when you move it or you'll have a real mess to clean up.

Re: storing unused engine
You cain't fill the oil to the top it will run out the rear main, they don't have a rear seal. You can put a lot of oil in cyl and crank it over with the plugs out by hand, get as much as you can around valve stems. Cover the engine as tight as you can so no air an get in. Walt

Re: storing unused engine
The engine is stored inside my garage. No heat, but not exposed to rain and snow.

Re: storing unused engine
Frank, I think you can buy a preservative oil.
When I was an apprentice in the Army many years ago We rebuilt engines and ran them with Mobil Arma 254 (524?) Anyhow the army stored rebuilt engines for many years with no harmful effect. The engines were run for a while (on a dyno)to run them in a bit. and then the oil was dropped out of them before boxing up. Apart from filling with(engine) oil again and following normal run in procedures, nothing else changed. |

Re: storing unused engine
Great info.
Maybe I should try to sell it, not that I know my original engine in the car works fine. |

Re: storing unused engine
Frank, if I were you, I wouldn't sell it. If this [rebuilt] engine has some miles on it, ie, it has been run in, how about just storing it indoors as you propose, and simply run it from time to time? Easy enough to rig up a battery, leads, coil and a gas can, voila!! it runs!! Best way to store it I reckon; keeps the oil circulating, and rings and valves free.
