Hand Cranking

If hand cranking a model A, do you crank clockwise or counter clockwise while facing the front of the car?

Clockwise, start at 6:30 o'clock and pull to 11:45 o'clock , keep your thumb on the outside of the handle or your arm will end up in your ---------

Ok then, when facing the radiator, which hand are you supposed to use to engage the hand crank?

You can use your left foot if you wan't ..., It's still clockwise facing the radiator .

Be sure the spark lever is full UP or you'll know it on the first fire.

and be doubly sure you are in neutral with the hand brake set or the car will run you over and ruin your day.....it has happened many times ....

Left hand. Then WHEN it kicks back, your forearm is less likely to be in the way.

If you can crank your engine in either direction something is wrong. Looking at the front of the engine you should be able to crank it clockwise. Turning it counterclockwise should push the crank out of the front of the engine. If this doesn't happen there will be a big problem when the engine starts and the crank spins with the engine.

When I was in high school my first outboard was a big old Evinrude Speeditwin, which is a large opposed twin where both cylinders fire at the same time (lots of torque). I wrapped the rope around the pulley and gave a pull, but forgot to retard the spark. I thought it was going to shoot me right out the back of the boat!

When I was 15, I weighed in at a whopping seventy pounds, that is exactly the way I would do it. Set the crank at 1:00, face the drivers side and get on the bumper with my left foot on the crank then put my weight on the crank. It only kicked back once and I never used that method again, ever.

My dad's had his car for longer than I've been alive (and I'm 33) and I know that it's only been hand cranked one time since he's had it just to say it was done. I've heard horror stories of trying to hand crank a car. People getting their hands broken and all kinds of bad stuff!

I still have a scar on my right hand index finger at the knuckle from pulling up hard on my crank and slipping. My knuckle caught the edge of the fender where it meets the edge of the radiator splash apron. Yeoooocchhh !!!!

When just a very young person (6), I decided to crank an F-20 Farmall. Didn't have enough strength to pull the crank through so set it at 3 o'clock and jumped up on it an hung over the crank. The weight of my body pulled the crank down and the engine started.

Needless to say, I could have been the 1st person in orbit way back in 1947.

That's one I would like to forget, especially the reaction it got a few minutes later.

On the "make sure the spark lever is retarded" statement. Let me add that if you have a good friend (like mine) near by. Be very leary of them
advancing the spark just as you go into spinning the crank! It is one of
the "funny" pranks we like to pull on each other with his Model-T's.

Back when I was in high school I had an original '29 Chevy. Once when
the starter Bendix spring broke I had to do a lot of hand cranking. It
was especially annoying if I stalled the car at a red light. I would jump out of the car grabbing the crank handle as I went. Run to the front, stick in the handle and most of the time I was lucky. She would fire up
before I was through the first spin cycle. Nobody ever got mad and started honking their horn. I guess they enjoyed the show and times
were easier on the road back in the mid 60's.
