Good morning , on my 55 wagon with basicly stock 272 with overdrive I have smoke out my left bank. but sometimes not so much .. When I got the car I did head gaskets .and frost plugs then later (1 year) I put a 4 barrel intake and tea pot on it , also installed a pcv while the intake was off. I would like to think I lapped the valves and put new seals on the valves , but at 74 my memory of what I did and should have done gets cloudy .... I also dont recall when exactly it started , only had it 2 years Any thoughts would be appreciated Fred

fast, have you done a compression test of the cylinders? Would be interesting to see how the left and right bank compares. Might be your answer. Best of luck.

its blue smoke right.make sure the exhaust flap on the right side is working.if its not everything is forced out the drivers side.

I get the part about memory, I’m just short of 74.

When you say “sometimes not so much” just what do you mean? If it smokes on start up, but varies, I’d be looking at valve seals, oil drain back in the heads, etc. If it’s all the time, not so much up there. But as said above, a compression test would be my first thought.

When you did the PCV valve did you use the valley pan, and if so, does it have a proper baffle? Having not had a proper baffle I can attest they’ll pick up oil and smoke or worse.

Thanks guys ... pulled the plugs one by one on left bank .. all where good except #7 which was totaly built up with brown deposts not black , I mean really built up cleaned and reinstalled and seems better, possibly a bad wire ? or maybe valve seal on that cylinder

looks like the photo Deposits ....
better means less smoke

A brown crusty deposit can be caused by oil seepage. The IGN burns and dries it as it is likely little and won't show as an oily deposit. Oil control rings should leave an oily deposit.

ALSO READ - DRY AND WET FOULING

How long since plugs and wires?

Plug reading can save you a lot of time. Maybe replace that one spark plug (MOTORCRAFT BF-82) and see how shes does and pull it again in a month to check it..

PERTRONIX II can alleviate most of this old tech.

Can you shows photo(s) of your PCV UPGRADE?
