Check for dampness at the steering column brace which is attached to the bottom of the tank. Also check the fittings that feed gas through the firewall.

No, that is not normal. You might check the bottom of the gas tank behind the steering column support bracket. Mine was seeping just enough to keep the area damp but never dripped.

Welding can blow it up.

It has been my experience that the 28 - 29 tanks will crack and seep around the perimeter at and through where the rolling spot weld holds the top and bottom stampings together. Gar Williams

My 29 Tudor has a fairly thick layer of solder around the tank bracket. It was done many years ago and it stays dry.

I have the same issue but I only smell it going down the road. If the tank is leaking wouldnt you smell it all the time?

Also, check your exhaust manifold and clamp for a leak, breathing carbon monoxide will make you lightheaded, you may not smell it if it's coming inside.

On my 31 when using the "air conditioner" feature on the windshield if I open it all the way I will get gas fumes inside, at the notch, or 1/2 way no fumes.

It turned out to be the gas guage gasket. It was almost new 9the rubber type) and the eythenol in the gas destroyed it.

A crack could be welded by someone with skill, soldered by someone good at soldering. But it may be a rich fuel mixture, i drove a car with the G.A.V. left open and after 1 mile the fumes would be strong enough to remind me to turn it closed again.

FYI - if you have a closed-car, and drive with the windshield swung all the way open (out over the filler cap), it is not unusual to catch a whiff of raw gasoline from the vents in the fuel filler cap, particularly in warm weather.

Check the seal on the gas cap.
If you find a minor weap around the steering column mount on the gas tank, will the magic gas tank sealer work? I know the best solution is to remove and fix properly.

As others have said, the gas gauge glass seal loves to leak. Sometimes it is hard to detect. CLean the instrument panel thoroughly and close up the car. Better if it is in a garage with still air. The next day enter the garage and follow your nose. Sometimes a white paper towel rubbed on the gas gauge glass will show pink even tho you can see the wet gas.

I use Momma for specially hard gas smells. She still has a sharp nose for bad oders.
My nose has been ruined by too much av gas and aroma monents.
