Generator and Fan
I have a generator and fan assembly that I do not know what it is off off. I think it a good idea to identify it before I put it up for sale. The pully is 3 3/4 inch diameter. All the others I have are just over 4 1/4. Could it be off of a 60HP engine?
Oh the fan is like most others I have Last edited by qmdv; 04-23-2024 at 09:29 PM. |

Re: Generator and Fan
There are many different generators, pulleys and fans. Please post a few clear photos of it. I can probably tell you more with photos.

20240424_090643.jpg 20240424_090704.jpg I assumed that a V8-60 had a smaller crank pully. And that they would have a smaller fan/ generator pully to achieve the same fan speed |

Re: Generator and Fan
Yes, V8 60 has a smaller crank and generator pulley. I looked through my spare pulleys and found one V8 60 pulley. They are hard to find and identify. There are two, maybe three different V8 60 pulleys.

Re: Generator and Fan
Appears like the 33-35 Generator. If you clean the body you will find a date code. The pulley usually has a part number as well as the front mounting embossed into the metal.

Re: Generator and Fan
Mke that '34-'36 as an original '33 V8 generator does not have a vented front bracket.

In 1940 there were two different pulleys. The first (early) design was larger in diameter than the later design. That had nothing to do with 60 or 85 applications.

There were a lot of different pulleys available over the years. A mid - late 1930s car with big V8 typically used a pulley .408" to .438 diameter. The V8 60 used a 3.68" diameter pulley in '37. In '38-'39 it could be either 3.71" or 3.40" diameter pulley. In 1940, the 01A-1000-B V8 60 generator used either a 3.12" or 3.18" diameter pulley. On the left is a 1937 V8 60 pulley, 3.68" diameter. PN BB-10130-B. On the right is a big V8 pulley 4.38" diameter. PN 68-10130-C. |

If you are, you must keep in mind, the parts listed are for service and in many cases Ford "made do" with what worked. In 1940, there were two pulleys regardless of vehicle application. The first design was 3 11/16" diameter. The later design was 3 3/16" diameter. I'm not certain where you got 3.12 and 3.18. Do you really think Ford made two pulleys that were a mere .060" different from each other?

Re: Generator and Fan
It does seem odd, but I'm reading this out of the Ford geen book. Just reporting what I read.

I kinda thought that's where you were getting your information.

Re: Generator and Fan
The BB- pulley is smaller because big trucks usually do not operate at high RPM the smaller pulley will increase generator output at lower RPM keeping the battery charged.

Re: Generator and Fan
Never use a generator or mechanical fam. Always use an Alternator and electric fan Last forever, works great.

Generally speaking, I wasn't talking a hotrods, where esthetics are more important.

Re: Generator and Fan
Many generators found recently are an amalgam of pieces from various years so it can become impossible to identify from appearance especially covered in dirt. The 33 does not have vent holes in the front mounting bracket and the 36 armature does not have a 5/16" threaded attachment for the pulley
