1953 Mercury Hub caps
OK, What's the secret to keeping the hubcaps on? These are full size stock Mercury caps on stock 15" wheels with Coker radials.
I even got passed by on cap the other day. I can go around the block and they start to come loose. Help!: |

Re: 1953 Mercury Hub caps
I think your problem is the radial tires. The wheels flex enough with the radials to pop the wheel covers off. I had the same problem.

Re: 1953 Mercury Hub caps
My solution was to quit using the full disks. I like the "poverty caps" better anyway and they sure don't come off easy.

Re: 1953 Mercury Hub caps
Dobie,
As I responded on the Early Ford V-8 Club forum, full discs tend to walk, then pop off, whenever radials are used. There are many old tales on how to fix, but the only fix that I have seen work is steel valve stems, like used on some trucks. The wheel cover will move against the stem and stop. It should not come off. Several guys I know have had success. Ken

A silicon bead around the edge of the rim where the wheeldisc attaches. Wait 10 min. then put cap back on. The longer you leave it to dry the better. This worked for me installing 56 Merc wheeldiscs on 5i Merc rims.

With all due respect, been there, done that. These discs will cut through steel. They laugh at a silicone bead. Ken

Re: 1953 Mercury Hub caps
I have used the steel stems for many years with no problems, I also wrap the stem with rubber tape so the hole in the cap is tight. Good luck. Walt
