Default 32 Pickup gas tank padding?

My 32 roadster PU has the gas tank inside the cab. It mounts with three bolts with rubber pads (2 on one side, one on the other). But I'm wondering if there is a pad of some kind that runs around the entire perimeter of the bottom of the tank to seal it to the floor of the cab. Not sure how that would work with the rubber rectangles around the bolts, but if there is no seal at all it seems outside fumes would be flooding into the cab. (Yes, I know it's an open cab and it will get a lot of air anyway).

Unlike with rear-mounted '32 passenger car fuel tanks, commercial and truck in-cab tanks were not installed with rubber pads, but rather with anti-squeak webbing surrounding the entirety of the tank.

Thanks, DavidG. Been too long since I removed that tank, but I thought I remembered some kind of webbing around it. Tank is going in tomorrow on Labor Day. :-)

DavidG: Do you know what the anti-squeak pad was? I have some 2" wide, but looking at my cab, I can see the impression of some that looks 1" wide. Thought about putting on some that's about 3/16" thick, but it will be a challenge to cut to curve around the corners of the tank, which is what the impression on my cab shows.

Also, I'm wondering what the recessed hole is for. The pic is from the driver's side, and shows the two cab-to-frame mounting bolts. But there is this other hole in a recess on both sides. The hole goes down through the wood mounting block, but it ends with the inside top lip of the frame covering about 1/2 of the hole at the bottom of the block, so there is no way a bolt of any kind would go through there. It's like a hole to nowhere. And it's slightly in front of the front edge of the gas tank, so nothing to do with that. Maybe something for the BB trucks if they used the same cab?

The original anti-squeak used was pre-formed and 1/16" thick. With that thickness it will be less of a challenge to form the corners although you'll still have to cut out a couple of pie slices on the inside of the webbing in the corners to achieve the desired end result.

The closed and open cabs were the same whether used on the 106" wheelbase commercial chassis such as yours or the longer wheelbase "big" truck chassis. The recessed hole that you show in your photo also exists on closed cabs and was indeed used as you suggest. I've attached a period photo of a couple of open cabs on "big" truck chassis.

David,

I recognize those photos from an article on the building of the New Jersey Turnpike.

Keep V-8ing and 4-banging!
