Speeding Tickets Anyone?
Just wondering how many of you have received a speeding ticket in a stock Model A.

Re: Speeding Tickets Anyone?
I've never actually gotten a ticket, but have been told to slow down a few times.I tend to drive the A's faster on the back roads around here to keep from having to downshift.I have a hill on my road that you can not make in a T unless you hit the bottom doing 37 MPH.That was the known number from long before I was born.If you hit the bottom doing 37 the car will stumble and start to miss just as you clear the top.At 35 the car will stall right at the top.I got stopped for hitting the bottom at 41 on the radar in a 23 T.He didn't write me,he felt he would be laughed at in court.I explained just why I had hit the bottom flat out like that,he understood perfectly. The speed limit there is 25 now thanks to young mothers with SUV's and cell phones. On the other end of the road was a fellow that bought one of those 41 Ford trucks with the 20 HP 9N tractor engine. He could come home down that hill, but to get to town he had the take the 3 mile long route. The truck just didn't have the power.

Re: Speeding Tickets Anyone?
I once got stopped on the old road coming from the San Fernando valley to LA (downhill) and was stopped for going over 65 MPH. I didn't get a ticket after showing the officer my original A motor and acting incredulous that the car could go that fast!

Re: Speeding Tickets Anyone?
Wasn't there a story going around that somebody with a running board car was stopped by a young officer who just wanted to tell his Captain that he too had put one foot up on the running board of a car and leaned into a window?
Someone else was stopped for having only one tail light (?)

Put the hammer down to let Hansel stretch his legs and noticed the flashing lights in the rear view mirror. "Did you know I had you clocked at 66 mph?" "No sir, I had no idea. I guess the speedometer in this old car is not very accurate." "I'm going to give you a warning", he said with a smile. |

"...received a speeding ticket in a stock Model A"?
Yeah, right... (Brings new definition to the phrase "In your dreams.") But not for the reason you might think. Here in California, if you boxed your Model A frame, filled it with mercury (or whatever bootleggers used), got a running start downhill with a tailwind and tried flat out, you'd still be passed by everyone else, whether on a residential street, highway or freeway, including by the local police/sheriff/highway patrol. Around here, speed limit signs are viewed as the minimum allowable speed, and the center divider just establishes who has responsibility for running pedestrians back onto the sidewalk. But, you gotta love it; life on the edge. And good weather to boot...

Re: Speeding Tickets Anyone?
I have not but it would be possible as many places have local speed limits of 35 or less so going 45 - 50 would put you in line for a ticket

Got pulled over by young buck in Boylston,ma, one night. The dumass cop came to my window and said, " You only got one taillight and it's not bright enough to see"
I said, "well then how were you able to see me to pull me over and the truck was made with one taillight" He sad shut the fuck up or I'll arrest you and tow this fucking piece of shit." My wife was sitting next to me! Can you imagine that type of behavior!!!!!!!! We only got away because my wife knew a cop there and the asshole called him there to make sure my wife wasn't lying. |

Re: Speeding Tickets Anyone?
I've gotten one on the freeeway in Riverside county for over 65. The CHP was ahead of me and pulled on to an overpass, let me go by then pulled in behind me with the red light--in 1968! Also got one on the city street in San Diego for 45 in a 35.

Re: Speeding Tickets Anyone?
A couple of years ago they had a Cannonball Run starting from Kitty Hawk, NC to Cal. These are all original antique bikes with the youngest being 1919. One gentleman was testing out his Sear 1912 on the beach road (old Rt 12) speed limit 35 mph and got picket up by the Kitty Hawk police for speeding. We talked about him just mailing in the fine when I told him how much court costs were going to be. He didn't mind paying the fine and court costs but it was going to be on his driving record plus his insurance rate would go up. That's when I told him when he mails in his fine to make it for $1 more. Kitty Hawk will then mail him a refund check for the dollar. I then told him to tear up the check. The case closed but can not be filed till the check is cashed.
And yes the cop was a butt head. They're not the greatest here. The police department headquaters closes at 5 PM every evening. But patrols come out around midnite for the drinking crowd. |
