40/41 pickup wipers?
I'm looking at my 41 pickup cab and the hole for the single wiper in the cowl is quite small, about 5/16".
Can anyone post pics of a standard 40/41 pickup wiper assembly, the motor, where it mounts, any linkages and the part that goes through the cowl. I want to keep things nice and simple, might go electric, bit would like to know what it is I'm supposed to be copying/replacing. I'm guessing the parts are the same through to 47. Thanks in advance, Mart. |

Re: 40/41 pickup wipers?
the hole is where the vacuum motor mounts, if you wanted one for the pass side you could just drill a hole. I hae a 41 3/4 ton stake bed and I used an 2 speed electric dual mount from Drake, you have to open the holes to provided templates to do so. They use 40 car wiper "transmissions" and have one on both drivers and passenger side. I cannot seem to post pictures to here so e-mail [email protected] and I will send some pictures

Re: 40/41 pickup wipers?
This is not a great picture and I can't be sure if this is the way Henry made it but this is the way my wiper was installed when I got my 41 truck. The blue rod is linkage and the motor is located at the bottom of the picture. It was vacuum operated and it worked. I changed the wiper motor for a 12volt VW bug motor and wired it to a two position rotary lamp switch and now have a 2 speed electric wiper.
I plan to remove the wiper to work on the vent linkage. Let me know if you need a picture out of the truck and I will send you one. |

Re: 40/41 pickup wipers?
On my 41 pickup I went with Drake. It is in and working but, not happy about some things.
1. The measurements for mounting the motor were way off. I had to be real caeful and adjusted to make it work. 2. The motor was in such a position to expose the wiring to the elements. If any water comes in through the vent it will go right on to the connections. 3. The metal bar that operates the passenger side wiper goes right through the glove box. I sent an email to Drake but, got no response back.

Re: 40/41 pickup wipers?
Roger, I had the same problems you had with mounting the motor, had to work at it, also had to modify the linkage for stroke. Lost just about all the glovebox-if I had it to do again, I don't think I would. As far as getting much back from Drake or any of the other repro guys-forget it. I know we are somewhat lucky to get any repro parts, other brands don't get much at all.

Anyone got anything showing the stock setup? I'd like to retain the single wiper and the small hole in the cowl. Mart. |

Re: 40/41 pickup wipers?
Call Ficken wiper service. he might have a spare/rebuilt original.
I get him to rebuild stock wipers for all my trucks... 5 or 6 40 pkps so far. Works great on stock or hot rodded pkps. JMO. Al

Re: 40/41 pickup wipers?
On my 40 pickup, I used a marine universal electric self parking wiper assembly on the drivers side (very easy to adapt, using a stock outer shaft bezel), and drilled a hole on the pasenger side, and mounted the stock vacuum wiper there, no problems with the glove box. Good luck!

Re: 40/41 pickup wipers?
I used the dual kit from Newport Engineering in my 40 PU and it worked great. They provide the pattern for the extra hole as well as EVERYTHING else needed. Would definitely use it again.

Re: 40/41 pickup wipers?
I haven't mounted the glove box yet and am now feeling that I will disable the passenger wiper so as not to butcher the glove box. I don't plan on using the wipers anyway so it should not be a problem. In fact I haven't had the wiper blade on my '32 for ten years. It was a daily driver for eight years and using rainx took care of the rainy days here in Californica.
