Engine wont turn over
First post, would just like to say hello to everyone,
So my issues is with a 12V 1950 Ford F-1, she's been sitting for almost two year and I went to finally go start her up. I cleaned the battery contacts, charged the battery overnight and hooked it up, pressed the start button without the ignition key turned to get fuel in the line, the engine turned over several times without any issues to prime the fuel line. Tapped the carb, sprayed some starting fluid in, turned the key and pushed the start button and she started up almost immediately. She ran for a couple of seconds and then stalled, not bad for sitting for almost two years. So I put some more starting fluid in her, pressed the start button and I get just a clicking noise from the solenoid....... Tried a couple more times, recharged the battery and still get a clicking noise. I cleaned all the contacts on the battery, the ground, and the solenoid, gave the started and the solenoid a couple of taps and still nothing but a clicking noise from the solenoid. I do have a battery disconnect on the negative side of the battery and I disconnected that and just hooked the ground wire right to the battery, tired that and it did like a half turn and then just a clicking noise. I'm out of ideas, I'm thinking either bad solenoid or bad starter, any ideas? Thank you, Craig |

Re: Engine wont turn over
Sounds like the battery so that is the first thing to check. Try a different one first. Is there gas in the carb? Look down the carb throat and see if the gas sprays in from the accelerator jets when you pump the throttle. May just be starting on the starter fluid.

Re: Engine wont turn over
sounds like either a bad battery or grounds or battery connections, do not use an exhaust bolt for a ground, run a # 8 or #10 wire from a rear head or manifold bolt to one of the starter bolts, check to see if one or more of the battery cables have corrosion in them, inside the cable cover, use 6v batt cables if you have them, a clicking solenoid can be caused by all of the above

Re: Engine wont turn over
Place transmission in high gear, and rock the truck backward and forward.
The bendix may be locked in the ring gear. Bruce

Re: Engine wont turn over
I once had an issue with using starting fluid or ether. It removes the lubrication on the cylinder wall and the piston can stick. Use some oil down the plug hole, let it sit and try again. This is only a suggestion that worked for me. Others may have comments that worked for them.
