How do you remove the pulley on these water pumps without breaking the pulleys?

Re: Water pump pully removal
Requires some tooling I think that JWL posted once on the procedure.Without tooling
You will end up with 2 piece pulley's. |

Re: Water pump pully removal
the best way is with a press, if you have access, if not
either make one with a hydraulic jack or take it to a machine shop |

A large vise can be used instead of a press. And as Ken said, check for a pin ... some do, some don't.

Re: Water pump pully removal
I have used a few methods to pull them. I have a two stud beam or push puller used in tandem with a large bearing separator that was made to be used with this type of puller rig. All are OTC brand. You can also use a large bearing separator with some blocks to push the shaft out on a press. With the press you have no feel for whats moving and which way like you do with a puller rig so you do have to be carefull not to press them to pieces. They aren't a real tight fit but time and corrosion have been know to hold them together better than you'd like.
The instructions link in the post above works well untill you find one that has had the regular snap rings installed to hold the double row bearing & shaft in the housing. I've seen folks break the housing trying to press the shaft out of the body with the snap ring still in place. The splitter with a beam puller applies even pressure around the edges of the pulley and will work. I wouldn't try a jaw type puller on there though. The chances of breaking the cast iron pulley are too great. Kerby Last edited by rotorwrench; 06-29-2011 at 05:46 PM. |

Re: Water pump pully removal
Merc,
8ba pumps are different from the earlier ones...the pulleys ,cast & pressed, are FRAGILE. Hard to believe but the easiest way I've found to get the pulleys off is to grab the impeller in the jaws of a lathe chuck and with the pump housing supported spin the impeller at about 1000 rpm and using a .060 undersize carbide drill drill the impeller shaft out relieving the press fit. The Mercury pumps are the only ones I rebuild since they are not repopped, at least to my knowledge. The made in India Ford pumps are, hate to say, pretty good. Charlie ny |
