removing stuck castle nuts
Trying to remobr a stuck castle nut. The cotter pin came out easily.
Nut does not appear to be rusted just tight. Suggestions to remove. All ready sprayed with liquid wrench for 1 week. |

Re: removing stuck castle nuts
Where is the castle nut? I would suggest a breaker bar in 1/2 drive if you have it. Some times you need to use an impact wrench to get them loose, if all else fails a gas wrench.

Re: removing stuck castle nuts
Can you try using a nut splitter? How about cutting the nut with a die grinder or dremel tool and cutting wheel. Where is the nut located? Posting a photo will provide better solutions.

Re: removing stuck castle nuts
Six sided socket. Sometimes a metric one is a little tighter (14mm on a 9/16" and 17mm on an 11/16")
Just get a good grip on it and undo it. Is it irreplaceable if it breaks? Try heating it first. Mart. |

Try applying "GIBBS" penetrating solution. Follow instructions on can.

I have used 50/50 Acetone and ATF with good results. Give everything time to soak and you should be good. |

Re: removing stuck castle nuts
Let me guess...it's threaded onto a ball stud on a drag link, or a tie rod end, and the stud is turning with the nut....? If so, as said above, try an impact wrench first. If that no-workie, disassemble the end of link and remove the stud. Get back to us. DD

Re: removing stuck castle nuts
I have drilled them in the low spots opposite each other, from the top of nut with a small 1/8", bit, then tap with a chisel and they will come apart.
Did this to some perch pin castle nuts, worked good. |

Re: removing stuck castle nuts
Everyone Thanks a million for all your suggestions. I could not have done it without all you guys. I owe you!
I will buy a impac wrench for future needs. This is a pretty much original car from 1933 and I imagine that I will have need of it. I was always afraid of schearing of the studs but I realized that most are just bolts and they can be replace if schreared off. |
