40 ford brakes
Does the short shoe go on the rear or the front for rear brakes thanks

The short shoe goes to the rear of the wheel cylinder and connects to the hand brake operating lever.

1940 Ford has Lockheed brakes. Long shoes goes on the front. Short shoe goes on the rear of each wheel. Larger dia. of wheel cylinder faces the long shoe. This is true of all 4 wheels. Bendix brakes are just the opposite.

Possibly worth mentioning that the short shoe goes to the smaller diameter end of the cylinder. Both the smaller dimensions go to the rear. (shoe length and cylinder diameter).
