Default 1936 coupe roof question

Does anyone know why ford put the canvas top insert in the roof. I have heard two different reasons. Was it a cost factor to save on material or was there a technology issue forming the roof.

there a technology issue forming the roof.

I have read there was a technology issue. I guess the deep draw needed to form the roof wasn't available at that time.

Lots of posts on this. Henry never spent money until he had to. His stamping presses where not big enough to make a 1 piece roof. Marketing even tried to advertise the canvas insert as a safety feature ( if you rolled it over and the doors would not open). 3 years after chevy went to the 1 piece Henry finally did.

It must have been cheaper than the labor to weld 5 or 6 pieces together.
