Default six cylinder starter

I am working on a 48 flathead six. I read that the starters are the same except the bendix gear is 9 teeth on the six and 10 on the v-8, is this correct? Also I pulled the starter and it has 10 teeth?? It started with the 10 tooth starter so what gives?

Flat 6's use the same starter and drive as the flat V8, 10 tooth.

Not sure about '47 and earlier, but '48-'51 sixes use a 9 tooth drive. A 10 tooth will work but wears on the ring gear teeth.

Well, I'm confused. Here's what the Truck Parts shows.

Not sure what they mean. My avatar was a 58,000 mile 6 cylinder car when I got it and it had a 9 tooth. I bought an original NOS Ford boxed 9 tooth off e-pay when I had the starter converted to 12 volt. I still have the box at home somewhere. I'll try to find it tonight. I bought a 254 engine complete (not sure what year)and another 226 from a '50 car and they both had 10 tooth drives.

do you guys think the 10 tooth starters in the sixes were replaced incorrectly?

the 48 F1 we are working on has been in the owners family for about 50 years ( they are the second owners), we pulled the starter and it has a 10 tooth gear, but could it be that it was replaced improperly sometime during the first ownership?

The green book is somewhat confusing - see P 496. No mention of later (H-series) sixes. So, I looked in my '48 - '56 truck book(s) and find references that can be interpreted to show both 9 tooth and 10 tooth pinions used in the 226 CI six. I think I would put back what was working. As a rule, Henry didn't change things just for the fun of it and commonly used the same accessories on both 6 and 8.

Sorry to be redundant - what I was looking at is what Ross has shown above (Post #5).
