Default rare pickup??

a guy brought in a 31 model A pickup, with an all steel top and a wider bed than usual, and someone told us that it is a rare truck. What is the deal with this? Can someone enlighten us on this truck?

Steel top wide beds were a late production item. The cab was made by Budd for Ford. Rear fenders aare different from other PU. The are not common, but not sure about rare.

The all steel cab was introduced in Aug of 1931. The Fenders were 10" wide and I believe the bed is 46" wide. The cab had one style number and the bed another.

The 1931 all steel cab (82B) could be matted with a wide bed (78B). The cab was made by Budd and the bed by Briggs.

This is from a couple of past posts;

"The radiator shell should look like a '30 except regular steel (not stainless) painted black with a '31 emblem. The head light and tail light buckets were also painted black. There was no deluxe version of this truck from the factory. There were no cowl lights from the factory but a dealer could have added anything."

"The '31 "Wide-Bed" did not have a logo on the tailgate. It had 3 hinges with a metal strap that went up the center of the tailgate, right across the area where the logo was on the earlier models."

The 'serrations' that are offset into the rear wooden roof cross member are NOT interchangeable with those of Budd and Ford, which make it very difficult to put a steel Budd top on a Ford cab.
