I would like to buy, borrow or rent these tools. Any leads on this would be appreciated.

Re: Spring shackle stud Remover/ installer set of tools
I am building a 40 front end and someone surely has some help with my question? I don't want to grind and drive the studs in as I have done in the past. I made a brass tool years ago that you can drive the studs in after they are ground down some, but I would prefer to press them in.

Re: Spring shackle stud Remover/ installer set of tools
Thought someone posted something about using a pitman arm tool and some sockets or adapters.
Edit: Not pitman arm tool, ball joint tool (see #9) Last edited by JSeery; 03-01-2015 at 01:55 PM. |

Re: Spring shackle stud Remover/ installer set of tools
See if someone near by has the KR Wilson tool to do this. It makes the job of removal and installation so much easier. The shells of those are not thick, just sheetmetal, I wouldn't grind on them at all besides what Kube reminded you of.

Re: Spring shackle stud Remover/ installer set of tools
I used a balljoint press from oreilly auto parts and a little improvisation. I also recall seeing the Delrin bushings on speedway.

Re: Spring shackle stud Remover/ installer set of tools
Jerry: Why not make a press to push the NOS style bushing in. Do you have a machine shop with welding capability, in your area?
36coupe: The rodders have been using a plastic like bushing. I believe Bob Drake has them in his on line catalog but you have to use the proper steel shackle bolt and end plate combination for the plastic (Delrin???) bushings. It's best to buy a complete kit for your spring eye size for the first installation. |

Speedway has the delrin shackle bushings. It sure makes life easier when you have to change out a broken axle during a road trip.

However, as has been stated previously, with the correct tools, this job can be done correctly.

Re: Spring shackle stud Remover/ installer set of tools
I did it the same way as sofaking.
Quite easy on the spring eye and with a little clean up on the axle perch it worked as well. I used washers that fit over the stud but contacted with the outer tube as a pushing point. Torchie |

Re: Spring shackle stud Remover/ installer set of tools
The K R Wilson tool books show the original tools. These tools press in the shackle bolt using the exterior metal shell of the shackle to press onto, as Torchie mentions above.
The hole must be clean, round and a true size so running a hand reamer through the hole is important start (for 1940, 0.750", front and rear). It is the shackle bolt that is larger than the hole as Kube has mentioned. To remove the old bolts it is much easier to start by removing the center bolt. Some can be hammered out but all can be pulled out. Again the K R Wilson tool book shows their tools for doing this job and the tools can be reproduced. |
