Lacquer over Epoxy Primer????
I am going to repaint the fenders on a Model A Roadster that I restored in 1987 and wondered if it would be better to use PPG epoxy primer on the bare metal as opposed to using the lacquer based primers that seem to contribute to the aging problems. I do not want to use base/clear for the top coat.

Re: Lacquer over Epoxy Primer????
I like PPG products. You have to decide what your top coat will be comprised of. Single-stage urethane is a nice, modern alternative, although the isocynates within are harmful if you don't have the proper protective gear. Whatever topcoat you choose, use the full system. PPG has a great site and lists material data sheets saying what can be topcoated with what.

Re: Lacquer over Epoxy Primer????
Epoxy's are used as a sealer and can be top coated with most anything. They are typically considered not sandable. If you have bare metal now it would be a good choice to start with but you will still want to use a sandable primer before you paint. Look at the PPG spec sheets for detailed info.

I don't know why you hesitate to use the ppg dplf 2 part primer. I have used gallons of it without regret under lots and under lots. Bottom line, keep some DP50LF around and use it liberally.

Re: Lacquer over Epoxy Primer????
f you have a good epoxy primer I wouldn't put lacquer primer over it.
I would just scuf sand with 800 wet so the primer has a teeth for the lacquer coat. This is assuming the metal is good and straight. Try a sample. G.M.

Re: Lacquer over Epoxy Primer????
I am not a painter, but I like using PPG products..
Last year I had to paint the fenders and lower sections of the doors on a 34. The car was lacquer. After down to bare metal I used DP50LF epoxy, then PPG K38 primer over that. Then thinned out the DP50 and sprayed a light coat to act as a sealer, then spray my lacquer on top... I would NOT use a lacquer primer.. |

Re: Lacquer over Epoxy Primer????
I own a collision repair business and my shop is certified by PPG. Their LV epoxy primer is the best! Direct to bare metal with no metal prep, fills great, no shrinking and sands good too. Forget lacquer !
