Default Can't regulate charging rate !

Generator charges 10 amps at idle and hard over at 20 when reved up a little. Moving the third brush either way makes no difference. Generator is grounding alright and seems to be wired correctly with third brush going to terminal, one brush to ground the other to the windings.... any idea what may be causing the problem ? Thanks folks, Robert

Ameter new? I have three repop ameters that only show amps at idle then jup to the right, pegged at all other times. I think they are too cheap to function correctly.
Old, stained stocker works great.

This has came up quite a bit lately. The field wire hooks to the third brush. the terminal post wire attaches to the insulated main brush. You need to get these wires correct before it burns out the field coils. See page 66 in the new Brattons catalog for an exploded diagram of the generator and wiring legend at the left lower corner oif the page.

make sure your battery and connections are good incld the bolt at the cable to frame....
always do your adjustments with an external meter

The Ground side of the field coils is either grounded to the case by a small screw, or it is clamped to the case by the pressure from the insulator of the output terminal. The feed for the fields MUST be connected to the adjustable brush. If it's somehow connect to the terminal or output brush, then you WILL cook the generator.

Checked it all out , even installed my friends generator out of his car and it worked just fine in mine... amp meter worked as it should. We made sure all connections were tight. Will check out to see if the generator was properly wired and will get back to you all with what we find.... thanks fellows, Robert
PS. new brushes had been installed and are in the correct position and all connections tight.

She was getting a little warm but not too hot to touch.... we never ran it long enough to harm it. We were aware of what could happen !! Only ran it long enough to check our trouble shooting. On of the brushes was in backwards and not properly mating to the armature, etc , etc....
Thanks

Dave, you're welcome. That is just one of many pictures I took of the cutaway chassis on display at the new Model A museum in Gilmore museum at Hickory Corners, Michigan.
