A beginner's guide to screwcutting on the lathe. From a beginner.
Part 1 of 2. Hello! Welcome to Mart's Machine Shop. After multiple requests (well, one,) to show screwcutting on the lathe I decided to put this video together. Lets just say I was on a learning curve. In this video I show one method of cutting a screw thread plus an alternative version for when you are cutting a metric thread on an imperial lathe or vice versa.
I show (almost) all the mistakes and bloopers because I was the one learning the most, but I did get a good result in the end. I hope you find it interesting. I certainly did. The main problem for me was editing it down to a watchable length. Don't forget to check out part 2 where I do actually get something resembling a decent thread. Ok lets get on with it. Awesome. Thanks for sharing all this great stuff. My next major tool purchase is going to be a lathe.

Mart, Thanks for making that excellent video.
You did mention settting the compound rest at 29.5 degrees to reduce chip load BUT, for those who are using a single point cutting tool, the video below does an extremely good job of visually explaining and showing why setting the compound rest at 29.5 degrees instead of 30 degrees is so beneficial. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lb_BURLuI70 Again, thanks for taking the time to make your video. Below is yours truly using his home made tool holder and hand ground single point cutting tool to make matching buttress thread for a fuel tank sending unit shown. I really miss my lathe. Thanks for the feedback fellas. Lathes are wonderful devices. As cas says, it's amazing how often you can use one.
19fordy: Great job on the large buttress thread. Ideal fodder for a one-off on the lathe. And any This Old Tony video is always worth a watch. Mart. |

Cutting threads on lathe is great to know. Cutting left hand threads, you start on the left side with compound turned to 29.5 degrees. Your tool moves toward
the lathe center. Good job |
