Generator question
We have an AA truck in the shop for repairs. The pulley on the generator had screws(4) holding the pulley together. When I went to remove the pulley, the main shaft in the generator pulley forward about 5/8". It moves back and forth. Anyone have an idea of what the problem might be before we look harder?? Maybe like a front main bearing??

Re: Generator question
Hi Bob -
You didn't mention what year generator, but there should be a retaining ring on the generator armature shaft that stops the armature from moving forward. See attached drawing - part callout 20 |

Re: Generator question
I appreciate the drawing. The AA truck is a 31'. I think the generator is original to the truck. 31 generator. The retaining ring is on the shaft and is visible when the shaft comes forward

Re: Generator question
Bob -
There are two retaining rings... another identical to that one sits directly behind the front bearing, locking the front bearing to the armature. Look again at the drawing I attached and you will see the rear retaining ring.. also part number 20 The bearing is held captive in the front end plate by the bearing retaining plate. |

Re: Generator question
Those rings are not spring steel.. just a maleable ring. It very likely just came out of it's groove and slid backwards.

Re: Generator question
Shims are offered to remove end play in the armature shaft , I think that Bratton offers them . I used them when I overhauled my generators and starters .

Re: Generator question
GRutter has got it. You will need to pull generator apart and replace or re-install that inside #20 retainer. My rebuild kit came with external split rings but I thought the original c clips fit better after I squeezed them together a bit.

Re: Generator question
Mr Rutter and others. You were right, The inner ring was not there. Apparently broke into pieces or fell away. I will order parts tomorrow. Thank you again!!!
