Default Enjoying the ride....until...

I love driving my '46 Tudor sedan, but the old girl left me on the side of the road last week. I was coasting down a small hill in third and when I tried to apply a little gas....nothing. I switched off the ignition and she immediately died. First thing I did was ensure there was plenty of gas. There was, I can hear the electric pump running and the 239 flathead didn't sputter like it was a gas problem, so I'm assuming the problem is in the ignition. Unfortunately, that's the part of the car I know the least about and am the most hesitant to get into. I checked the coil wires, no problem there, but I'm not getting any spark to the plugs. How do I check the coil and how do I proceed if the coil proves to be OK?

If you can hear the pump running, the tank is empty…

Just a thought!

Kind regards, Christian

No, you can hear the electric duel pump running anytime the switch is on but the motor has not been started.

Ol Bill, look in top of carb and pump throttle. If squirters squirt you've got gas. Run a wire from battery hot terminal to coil terminal and try cranking her. If she don't, look at coil, condenser, points.
To check coil, what sort do you have?

I agree. Pump stops pumping when gas has filled the line. You can't compress a liquid.
Unless you have a loop bypass in the line, and then the pump will not pump the gas with any pressure as it keeps going in a loop .

i wish i had a magical pump. All the electric fuel pumps ive had were noisy empty, and quiter when theres gas. But it doesnt stop trying to pump or stop making noise, just changes pitch.

It depends on the type of pump, some stop pumping when up to pressure, some carry on clicking away slightly quieter.

You say you checked the coil wires and found no problem? What did you check? Did you check for power to the coil?
Martin.
