I bought my first 1936 Ford 3 window and the cowl vent won't stay closed. It operates fine but there isn't any catch to keep it completely down.

Wouldn't there be a latch type catch or something that the arm would catch on to keep it closed or open for that matter. It does stay open.

Any pictures would be Great!

Yep.
I just looked. When i pull the chrome bar toward the dash, it doesn't want to go far enough to let the ratchet bar notch to catch. The spring is hooked up and all seems to be working right but it wont quite go far enough to catch in the notch and the end of the slide.
When I was just looking at it and trying to push up the slide bar while pulling on the chrome bar so as to help the notch catch, the ratchet/slide bar came off the top attachment post. The ebay link that was sent shows a small spring, what is that for and where does it go?

I have a 35 coupe, and the small spring is a compression spring to put tension on the slide bar. you have a bolt with a large washer ( mine is brass) against the slot, the compession spring and another washer. you tihgten the bolt to contrrrrol tension on the slide, to keep it open or closed in different positions. Hoped this helpeed.

Theres a spring that goes from the bar its connest next to it to the curved bar used a brake spring on my car just didmine this moring.

I hope this picture will help. The brass washer for mine in on both sides of the slide arm with a thick washer below the nut that tightens the small spring.

Gary, that does help. Do you have a picture of the other side showing the little spring? Mine doesn't have a littlt spring. It looks like some one put in a solid steel tube.

Some (most) vent gaskets are too thick, causing a problem similar to yours. The vent will not close all the way.

Does anyone sell that spring and bolt setup?

What do I do about the gasket being to thick? I was assuming that was the problem.

As you can see in Gary Tosel's photo the stud with the spring is part of the arm and not easily removable. If yours is missing (broken off) this stud that the spring fits onto you could replace it with a 1/4-28 bolt without a hex head. It will have to be welded or peened in place ( due to clearance)and it should have a hole in the end for the cotter pin for the nut on the end. there are two brass washers on the stud, steel washer, roller, spring, and the slotted hex nut. Even if the gasket for the door is too thick and you replace it the door will not close properly without the stud and hardware and it has to be in the exact location as the original.

I checked fordbolts.com they sell the castle nut and cotter pin but not the cowl vent pivot stud.

Does anyone know where I can get the cowl vent pivot stud and spring, washers, nut ,cotter pin etc as a kit or individually for that matter?

On my 36, it is frozen shut with rust...any ideas on how to open it without doing damage to any of the components?
