Default Carburetor float height problem.

I am working on a Zenith carbuetor. I have been trying to set the float height. I am using an original float and a Viton tipped valve. With one gasket in place and the upper body upside down it measures 13/16" from the machined surface to the seam on the float. The float is nearly parallel to the machined surface. The float does not appear to have been damaged. I am trying to get the height close before I move on. This seems like the float is going to sit too low and I,m not sure what I can do to correct it. Any thought would be appreciated. Thanks. Howie

Rule of thumb: If float is parallel to carb top, you're pretty close. Fire it up, if it runs well, don't diddle with it!

Set the float to 5/8".

I understand I am shooting for 5/8". The problem is I don't know how to make further adjustment since I am down to one washer. I tried an original style valve in place of the Viton tip valve and that made the problem worse. I know it will run but I have have soot build-up on the spark plugs and would like to correct it. Thanks again. Howie

you want the fluid level 5/8ths from the gasket surface of the bowl when the carburetor is assembled and connected to a charged fuel line.. Not 5/8ths from the center of the float to the gasket. This can only be determined by using a gauge that indicates the fuel level . Bills rule of thumb is the common rule of thumb. To dial it right in get or make the tool pictured here. It screws into the bottom drain/main jet cap and shows fuel level like those coffee pots with the glass gauge . You adjust the seat with varying thickness gaskets

Yes, and the brass float is made to be bent or slightly adjusted in its set point to get the fluid level 5/8" from the top housing. You can also remove the lower bowl and with everything else connected use a small mason jar or the like held against the gasket surface and turn on the fuel at the fire wall and measure the level when the float shuts off the fuel. And adjust it accordingly.
