Star washers
My T has been leaving it's mark everywhere I go with it. I tightened everything I could put a wrench or screwdriver on. So I've pulled the engine now and pulled the hogs head off. While I was pulling out the pan bolts everyone of them had a star washer on them. Is it possible these star washers were causing the oil to seep through them and therefore make a mess everywhere I went with it?

Re: Star washers
Could be, especially that they are the wrong washers. You are working on a Ford right? Star washers are for a Star car, not a Ford.

Re: Star washers
The pan bolts should have sealer on them and no washers.

Re: Star washers
Star washers are not designed to be a sealer style washer.

Re: Star washers
The original bolts are drilled & the nuts are castellated. Regular split lock washers & cotter pins are used to lock them. All have the nuts to the top except one under the timer, it can short out a termial. If everything is ok the gasket should hold the oil in but after about 100 years things can be out of shape a bit & can leak around the bolts. Mac's has a set of bolts with rubber coated washers to combat this - http://macsautoparts.com/ford-model-...0R3CHL1095030/
( Oso Handy, if you take a Continental engine out of a Star & put it in a Durrant, do you have to change the pan washers??) |

No, you just need to change the heifer rod that connects the bull pinion. I know Mike real well, I have to pull his chain when I can.

Re: Star washers
Careful Andy, I don't think you should be pulling my chain without buying me flowers first. Geez, ever since my divorce I've got everyone hitting on me. Remember what I told you at the show at St Joe.

Re: Star washers
No the star washers would not cause oil to leak. The pan to block/trans cover bolts are all outside of where there would be oil leaking. What would cause problems is over tightening the bolts and putting a bulge in the lip of the pan so oil could leak between the pan/gasket/block.
The inspection cover on the bottom is a different story. They are in direct contact with the engine oil. No lock washers there. some sort of sealer works good there. You do not need to use a cotter pin in the pan to block bolts if you use a lock washer. |
