1951 239 F1 Truck Engine, What's Red And What's Black
I am getting ready to paint my freshly rebuilt engine for my `51 F1. From what I have learned it was originally red. Now what is black? The way I understand the starter, generator, distributor base and tube, ignition coil, air filter, oil filler cap and the oil filter should be black. Is the oil filler tube and the breather tube supposed to be black? Have I missed anything?
Thanks.

When I sanded mine before painting they both appeared to have been black so I repainted them black.Oh yeah mines a 49 but should be same.

Shadtree, here is a photo of the 8RT in our '53 F-100 Panel, I think it is painted correctly...

52-53 truck engines were Lincoln Green. Or a close match Detroit Diesel Alpine Green. 52-53 Ford car engines were Tangerine Orange.

Re: 1951 239 F1 Truck Engine, What's Red And What's Black
Thanks everyone. The oil filler tube will be black. Vic, a picture is worth a thousand words. I see the pulley on the crankshaft is black. I had already painted mine red before installing it. Also the generator bracket is black, not just the strap.
This all helps. This won't be a show truck by any stretch of the imagination, but if I do what is correct then it will be a step in the right direction should someone decide to restore it later. You Fordbarners have made me this way. I have always liked the looks of the `48-`53 pickup. It is a three window coupe with a bed... Thanks, Bud Reynolds

Shadetree, it was pretty normal for all the "bolt on" parts to be painted black for the ’51 F-1, with the exception of the fuel pump stand, and I've seen them unpainted and painted the same color as the engine as well...
