Default Slaping noise in engine

When starting the engine a slapping noise [like a leather belt hitting the wall ] came from the front. I pulled the fan belt, restarted and same noise! Suggestions readily accepted.

Did this just start, or has it happened before?

Is it the same whether the engine is cold or hot?

My engine also has a noise which I'll probably look into this winter, but I'm sure it's piston slap caused by the rear cylinders being overheated by the cooling chamber being blocked by a lot of rust buildup.

Rods out of Alignment is the only thing that causes piston slap.

Try Amazon.com for a mechanic's stethoscope to try to pin point where the noise is coming from.
