Default Anyone know of an East Coast Y-Block builder?

Taking the 272 Y-Block out of 1955 Customline with a Ford-O-Matic transmission and going to replace it with a newly built 292 Y-Block.

Also, any suggestions on other stuff to replace while I'm doing this? Change transmission?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Depends on how much money you want to spend. One of the first things I would do is install a AOD trans, or at least a C4. You will never have a better time than with the Y block out of the way. JMHO.

Install a '57 up distributor and matching carb and manifold to get rid of the Load-o-matic distributor if you have not done so already.

Will a AOD transmission bolt right on to a 292 Y-Block? What do you mean by Y Block out of the way?

So, 292 with a four barrel carb and a newer than 57 distributor. Ok, update to 12 volt?

To use an AOD with a Y-block the adapter kit with starter will set you back about $850 then you have the cost of the AOD and the brackets and TV cable to do that will get you close to $2K by the time it is all said and done. You could get a good running 5.0(aka 302)and AOD for under $1200 and bolt in and have an engine that will be easier and cheaper to build and find parts for.Like I did (see Pix)

You could add a 4 or 5 speed Manual tranny for $500.00 / $650.00 range,,,

Stick with the Y-block. A well built y-block has as much or more torque than a 5.0, tons more eye appeal and a unique sound. Not everybody has one and they are tough engines. The AOD is a very good addition to the y, if you have the money to buy the adapter. The FMX can also be adapted very easily and is a practically bullet proof transmission (but very heavy). Use a distributor from a '62-'64 F100 with a 292 and a 4 barrel intake (ECZ-9425B). And definately update to 12 volts, with an alternator.

Put me on the list for keeping the yblock in it. Small changes like Petronics ignition, 57 dist. & going to 12v with an alternator make them very driveable. Going with an AOD trans while the best auto trans update I dont think is necessary unless you do alot of long distance travel. I think a C4 or FMX would be fine for just cruisin'. My 57 already had a 3sp so I went with the T5 5sp. Before I moved from Mi. I was doing more long distance drives and that 5th gear was handy. Here in Az. I dont get to use it much so far.

Yup add me to keepin' a Yblock in it list. I was fortunate to already have most of the toploader 4spd setup that is now in my '56 so I don't know how much it or a T5 would cost.

Not sure where you live at but I can help you . If you want to use the Y block and do a rebuild , it will not be a cheap rebuild at all . Y block parts have really gone up in price over the last few years .
Now if you decide on a 289/302/5.0 I can help you out there with no problems . I build them in my garage . I am building one for Ron , raceron1120 , this winter .
If you would like anymore information about the engine building I can do for you , just shoot me a PM and I can give you all the details or the in & out of engines for whatever you want one built for . I can build one from stock to fast and wild !
I would love to build a Y block soon too .

Jim

I think you would love a T-5 tranny behind that fresh 292. I did it for little money with the great help of my friend Ralph, (retired mechanic), and steady advice from the guys on this site. I've let friends drive my truck and they are now doing the same set up. That five speed is sporty, great on the highway and helps with the gas mileage. I would also do the other suggested upgrades like the 12 vt, and updated dist. I added Toyota power steering, Bronco power brakes, Trans Am front sway bar and Explorer rear sway bar. Thats my two cents worth. - John

I'd keep the Y-Block also. SBF's are getting to be the new SBC, everybody's got one. Y-Blocks sound fantastic and a dress ones are one of the best looking engines around. depending on what kind of driving you do there is several transmissions to choose from.

Here's one of mine with a C-4

But keeping the Y or not wasn't the question. OP asked "Anyone know of an East Coast Y-Block builder?"

Consider the radiator, since you are already going to have it out.
Expect that you are looking for trouble-free cruising. A problem here can
ruin a day and possibly create a tow charge.

If you've been in Balto for a while, you should know of him. Rents his old shop out in Jessup, now home based machine shop.
