Default How do I remove a steering wheel off of a 48F1

I cannot figure out how to get this steering wheel off. It on a 1948 F1. I've tried a 3 legged crab type puller and a timing gear puller without sucess.

Any suggestions?

They used a puller with arms that went behind the spokes and centered on the nut on the shaft. I've looked for one, but yet, haven't found one. Some have suggested drilling a hole on each side of the wheel and threading the holes so you can use a modern wheel puller. I got mine off by unthreading the nut so it's flush with the shaft then pulling hard on the wheel while someone else taps the nut squarely as not to mangle the threads. It should pop off. Mine did after 3-4 solid hits. I'd spray a good penetrating oil around the shaft and let it sit for a few days. If you're going to trash the wheel, then beat it on the back of the spokes. It's stubborn, but it will come off eventually. Biggest thing is to be careful about the nut and threads on the shaft.

Looking at your pic, it looks like it has moved some ? If it has, then socking and rocking it my loosen it, By the looks of the wheel, it's pretty much scrap. Anything you do now won't hurt it much. Another good penetrating fluid is acetone and auto transmission fluid in a 50/50 mix. Put the nut back on and tap the nut.

i had the same problem with removing the steering wheel on my 48-f1..what i did was drill and tap two holes in the collar so i could bolt on a regular type steering wheel puller..put a washer on top of the threaded shaft and tighten down the puller bolt and it popped off

I did my motor mechanics apprenticeship at a Holden (GM) dealership in the late '60's. All of us had our own steering wheel "puller" (remember this was before the days of collapsible steering columns). The "puller" was a long bolt (3 - 4 inches) with a deep nut locked to the thread with a shorter nut above it. We removed the steering wheel nut, screwed on our "puller" (leaving approx 1mm gap to the wheel hub - this gave max protection to the shaft thread) then with knees pulling the bottom of the steering wheel and a hand pulling the top we would give the head of the "puller" a good thump with a decent size hammer. Usually only one thump was enough. Never failed. As someone earlier said, the important thing is not to damage the thread on the steering shaft.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I did manage to get the wheel off, however, the steering wheel is of no use any longer. Anyone have a good used one they want to sell?

I have one but needs some epoxy where the rubber has shrunk. Free plus the ride.

I have several that are about 1/2 done in the repair process. I've used PC-7 epoxy and filled and sanded them to the shape needed. I put primer on them. You'd have to do the wet sanding and more primer and a finish coat of paint. PM me if minterested.
