Default Rear axle ratio

What does a 9-40 rear end go in? I have a 1940 standard V 8 that has 9-40 stamped on the housing. That would be a 4:44 ratio to low for the car.

What engine do you have in this car? It may have originally had a 60hp engine, which could have had 9-40/4.44:1 gear ratio. Having 9-40 stamped on the housing does not necessarily mean it has those gears now.

I built a real stemmy 276 for a friends 34 coupe vintage stock car with 4:44 gears, BOY, does that shit and get down the straight. I found him a set 4:55 that I think came out of the 41 pickup 4 cyl. I don't think he has installed them yet. I love it. Wish I was 40yr's younger. Walt

Brooks, You can also determine rear axle ratio by doing this:
http://www.btc-bci.com/~billben/reargear.htm
It would be a good way to double check if it still has 9-40 gears.
