Default Rusty Gas Tank

Need some good ideas to deal with rust in a gas tank. Do not want to remove the tank for complete cleaning and treatment but must deal with the problem as it is plugging up my fuel system and my A not fun to drive. I know there has been a lot written about this but any ideas are really appreciated. I want to get back on the road.

Stan - There are a couple things you can do.

1) you can add a "dirty" leg. See: http://idisk.mac.com/forever4/Public...llyshutoff.htm
This will show you how to construct one. Keep draining it on a regular basis, and over time it will remove the majority of the rust. You my be able to get to the point where you can remove the dirty leg and put the regular valve back in.

2) If you have really big flakes, you can "wash" the tank with gasoline or an appropiate cleaner of your choice. Pour in 5-gallons, slosh the tank back and forth, and drain through a strainer of some type back into the 5-gallon bucket. Continue doing this until the majority of the rust is out.

I hope this helps.

No matter what you do short of removing the tank, rust will still be there in some form. I used a dirty leg with a long hose to the outside of the car. Instead of gas I used a high pressure nozzlel on a water hose and repeatedly washed out the tank (cheaper and safer). The draw back is that water will try and hide in the tank. The good news is that the weather is hot enough right now that if you leave the car in the sun with the cap off for a couple of days the moisture will evaporate. Using a little MMO in the gas may retard the growth of more rust. It has worked for me in the past. Your results may very. Good Luck!

we have a skid steer tractor that alway used to starve for fuel. we finally figured out the non rust coating kept clogging the outlet hole. we hooked a long piece of 1 1/2'' rubber tubing to the end of our wet/dry shop vac. and vacuumed out the tank and have never had a problem sense. we have also done this to many other tank with great results. I say don't coat the inside of your tank.

you might think so, but we have never had that happen. you could always rinse the tank out with water then vacuum the water gunk out.
