Default muffler selection

I really need to draw on someones experience. I have to replace my muffler as an intermittent ignition problem caused it to blow out. It is a stock style custom single exhaust welded in. I want to go back with muffler that I can replace without welding. I would like a mellow tone slightly louder than stock that I can hear without a drone. The specs on the one I am replacing are:
factory sound with 24" over all, oval 5x9 with an 18" body 2.25" inlet 2.25" outlet both offset. My pipes inlet and outlet are 2" so someone welded the gap between pipes
Where/what brand/replacement/# do you guys recommend? Do I buy a muffler with a 2" inlet and outlet and buy 2 adapters and 4 clamps? The only one I have found so far is a Walker generic 17844. Forgot to post, the car is a 59 Edsel with the 361v8.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Go to your local Napa store. The exhaust catalog has all their mufflers listed by dimensions. Ask the counterman to let you look at the catalog. They should be able to help you.

The walker generic muffler is a good choice and quiet. I agree with the previous comment, take the old one to Napa or your favorite parts store and have them search their catalog. Remember that the larger the muffler, generally, the quieter it will be.

I did all my exhaust this vacation. Ran a flexible 2" from manifold to 90º 2" steel bend on the outside of the left frame rail, and into a 2" inlet on a 24" smithy muffler, final pipe runs all the way from there between frame rail and inside rocker panel, just peeking in front of rear left wheel through a 70º bend.
I dislike the sound of the smithy in mid range rev. I have nothing to compare it to but seems too rappy. Deep throaty but still quiet at idle, throaty and a bit loud at full throttle.
Muffler seems well build and a good choice, but id like to try porters or other brands.
After the first test run, I disassembled the whole thing and ran a straight pipe, like a lake pipe but between rail and rocker.
It is waay too loud.
Assembled all again. No issues so far.
Can deliver some pics by the weekend.
Regards

Well... its in there. What a pain in the behind to do on the garage floor. The replacement
was slightly larger than the original so it was a very tight fit. A test drive revealed no rattles so all is well again.

It sure beats beer cans & baling wire! who hasn't been on the garage floor or driveway "fixing" a muffler cuz John Law said to? Oh, to be young again, eh? NOT! I used dual Porters on my 56, love the sound. Glad you got yours replaced.

If your going to use the pipes already on the car, get one a little longer to account for any pipe you may have to cut when removing the old muffler
