How much is too much Oil
Still being a relative newbie have a question about the oil level. Just changed oil on my stock 29. The level is just above (1/8") the "F" mark on the dipstick, is this ok or should I drain a little. Don't want to do any damage.
Thanks, Leadpot |

Re: How much is too much Oil
When I bought my first A it was from a Model A mechanic that was in the business all his life. One of his cautions was do not overfill the oil as it is just about as bad as not enough. He said as soon as you go beyond the full you are asking for trouble !

Re: How much is too much Oil
My understanding too. At the advice of many in our club, when I do an oil change I replace with 4.5 quarts.

Don't know if my dip stick is org. or not, when I change the oil I only put in 4 qt's, then after eng. warm up bring it up to 1/2 qt. low mark. Leadpipe, If it were me I would drain out about a 1/2 qt. or you can just wipe down the oil pan after each drive untill the oil level drops to aprox. 1/2 qt. low. JMO. I also do not over fill the trans. and rear end, if I can touch the oil with my index finger, I leave it alone.

Fill it so it is about a half quart low on the dip stick and that should save you from cleaning up after it when it marks it's territory. |

Re: How much is too much Oil
I have several dip sticks, all with different line locations for full. I don't know of anyting that will get damaged with a higher oil level.

Drain a little, it is a good excuse to spend some time with it. Plus there will be no worry. Paul

Re: How much is too much Oil
I wouldn't worry too much if the oil level is only 1/8 inch above the full mark.
Don't lose any sleep over it. Rog |

Re: How much is too much Oil
Thanks for the advice - went ahead & drained it to just below the "F" mark. Was no big deal to drain some down - was too tired (being lazy) before & thought it will be ok but changed my mind later.
Thanks again, Leadpot |
