Alternator hidden in a generator case?

I am working on a ‘51 F-1 and the owner has decided to stay with 6V Positive ground. I like the idea of an alternator that looks like a generator. I’m pretty sure that there is at least one company making these but is there more than one? Is one better than the other? Thanks in advance.

Power master seems to be the go to for this. A new one came with my rebuilt engine but I gave it away. I kept my 52 f-1 6v and just decided to stick with a FOMOCO generator. The truck is wired with just about every accessory you can think of, and it all runs bright and flawlessly. I thought about switching but keeping all original was important to me and I like the originality of the old parts but rebuilt, along with its inconveniences and all that entails.

The PowerMaster alternator that looks like a generator is actually a very small alternator stuffed inside of a case that is slightly bigger than the stock generator. I have one and it fried itself at a young age. I was able to get it repaired (guts replaced) at an alternator shop, and that has held up for a few years. If you can still find a shop that does such work.

Powermaster early on had some QC issues. They were addressed, years ago I spoke with them at SEMA. They admitted their mistakes and took care of them. Check Summit Racing for purchase, they ship no charge with orders > $99.00.

In the future, I will probably want to switch over to an alternator. I believe my motor is a 47'. What other changes would I have to make if I did the switch? The 6V Flathead is new to me. I haven't had a generator since my VW Bug in 1985.

I hate to be "that guy," but if your vehicle has made it 83 years with a generator.... Just wondering.

Well Ken, there is always “that guy” and today you’re it. The generator needs replaced anyway so if it’s gonna get done, now’s the time. No more voltage regulator. Additional capacity if needed in the future. If it belonged to me personally I would switch to 12 volt as well but the owner wants to stay with 6V. Final answer “I want to”. Sometimes that’s the only real answer.

In my 6v 37 i recently swapped out the original gene for a Powergen alternator and its fantastic. I also reconditioned the original gene as a fall back.
