Easy grind mig wire
Where can I buy "easy grind" MIG wire? When I describe it that way to welding supply people, I draw a blank. Is it known buy another name or designation?
Thanks |

Re: Easy grind mig wire
Pretty sure it's made by Hobart...I think my local Tractor Supply carries it.
Edit: Sorry, mis info, followed the link, it's ESAB, not Hobart. |

I got mine from my local autoparts store. They knew what it was right off. What size/diameter are you going to use? Torchie. |

Re: Easy grind mig wire
Sounds like a good idea, but is it really worth the cost and hassle of changing it back and forth? I would be willing to give it a try if it is was that much better, but most of what I have read just say somewhat better. Are there uses out there that are sold on the difference and think it justifies the cost?

Re: Easy grind mig wire
JSeery, if you are trying to do the best body work you can the issue is the weld itself. If you want to metal finish the piece, the weld has to be as close in properties as the 2 pieces you are joining if you are going to try to work the repair. If the weld is harder, then it cracks and breaks, won't shrink the same and is generally difficult to shape with hammer and dolly and ends up lumpy. If all you are doing are lap joints and hitting it with filler, it probably doesn't matter what kind of wire you use. If you want smooth repairs that require only primer then you have to be able to work the welded pieces.
I personally now use TIG (like gas welding but with an oxygen free weld site) but have successfully used my MIG with the soft wire and still was able to metal finish the pieces. I have tried to fix other's work done with the harder (S6) wire and you have a real fight on your hands. It all depends on what your level of comfort is with the finished product as to if it is worth it to you. |

Re: Easy grind mig wire
I agree with deuce. Easygrind is a marketing ploy. I have used it and I don't think it grinds any different than any of the other stuff, yet it conforms to the same standards in strength and sheer etc.
TIG would be the best way to weld it by far, and next to that would be (IMHO) a jewelers torch on oxy/acetylene and keep the heat involved region to a minimum. A nice soft weld weld that hammers well and most closely matches the original material. |

Re: Easy grind mig wire
You will never metal finish it with any mig wire. Its either tig or torch.

Re: Easy grind mig wire
Have done a lot of torch welding and don't own a tig, so I guess it is torch. I like to hammer weld the seams which I understand you can't do with a MIG weld.

Acet welding with bailing wire worked good years before "mig & Tig.
Could it be skill is not what it was 50 years ago? Bruce

Re: Easy grind mig wire
Yep, most of my work is gas. I get my grandson to mig for me and I don't have a tig.
