Smithy's Glass pack Mufflers
MY stock 34 with a stock 221 stud engine is going to need a muffler replacement soon. Thinking about changing to a single Smithy's glass pack but need some advice about which length to get. I would like something with a little more authorative sound but not something that is too loud. Is a Smithy's muffler the best choice? What do you recommend for this car with single exhaust. Also if someday I go to a dual exhaust system would this change the length of the mufflers used? Thanks in advance for your opinion.

Re: Smithy's Glass pack Mufflers
I like your choice of mufflers, others won't agree. I like Smithy's deep mellow sound. Smithy's has been around since the 50's and some say they are now made in China, I don't really know, yet I run two of them on my `35. They are now 5 years old without an issue. It makes sense the shorter the muffler the louder they are.

My 34 Ford .....................
I have a single 24" Cherry Bomb Muffler (Straight - fiberglass packed) on my 221 '35 engine. I was disappointed on how quiet it was. It is louder than stock, but not much. I have dual Smitty's on my '34 phaeton and like them very much. MIKE |

Made up a pair of pipes to fit in place of the mufflers just to see if it would be too loud with straight pipes. Six years later it still has straights on it. Has a nice flathead sound and nobody has complained about noise. |

Re: Smithy's Glass pack Mufflers
I'm running straight pipes on my 239 also. 1"7/8s out of the manifold to 2" all the way back to the rear of the car. I have the chrome Ford logo tips on the ends. Sounds pretty nice.

Re: Smithy's Glass pack Mufflers
I use two 22" Smithy's and they are just right. I dont like 'em too loud, gets annoying on a trip, and I dont like 'em to "rap" on decelleration either.

Re: Smithy's Glass pack Mufflers
In the 1960's my father ran twin pipes without mufflers on his V8 Pilot when he got tired of replacing mufflers. He told me he ran the last few feet at 1 inch diameter. Always got a warrant of fitness (New Zealand) and I remember it as much quieter than the boy racer stuff I hear around today. In the 70's, when I got my F1, I sleeved pipes right through my twin glasspacks (Cooper) when I couldn't get the sound I wanted (to my 17 year-old ear). When I connected the same exhaust up to a 272 a year later it was apparently a bit on the loud side and I found myself doing a 'please explain' to a magistrate (explanation accepted). Today I'm back to the flathead and twin glasspacks (still Cooper but unsleeved) which have a bit of a bark (to my 17+ year-old ear) - I'll try the Smithy's next.

Re: Smithy's Glass pack Mufflers
I have dual Smithy's on 'Lil Red and they are pretty quiet. Had a 53 Merc as a teen with large, long round mufflers (stock?) - it sounded great.

Re: Smithy's Glass pack Mufflers
Brockman Mellowtone Steel Packs if you're running mufflers.

Re: Smithy's Glass pack Mufflers
Yep straight pipes all the way back [duals]. Nice sound too,not loud at all.ken ct. Keeping the tail pipes small [stock size] makes all the diff in the world.Bigger is louder.

Re: Smithy's Glass pack Mufflers
I don't have a flathead but a Yblock in the '56. They come in several different lengths for selective fit and sound.
I run dual Porter steelpacks on it. Nice and mellow at idle but they will bark if you want 'em to. They sound great at cruising speed. I've also heard good about the Brockman steelpacks. Porters are USA made and if you're a HAMB member he offers a pretty good discount to Alliance members. I haven't checked lately but there used to be a video of a '48 flathead running dual Porters on their website if you want to check it out: http://www.portermufflers.com/ |

My Smitty's have been on the 39 convertible over 30 years and sound like concert music. G.M.
