I just made a dumb mistake
I installed the pan on my 59ab this weekend, without installing the flywheel first. brought my flywheel home from work this afternoon and OOPS!
something told me, that the hole sure did look small for that flywheel to fit in after I did it, but I thought, who would design an engine that you would have to pull the pan to change the flywheel? I guess Henry did! |

Don't feel bad... I think we have all done that once.

Re: I just made a dumb mistake
I've done that, but my 59A is Canadian and has a separate pan for the flywheel. just thought I'd rub that in......

Re: I just made a dumb mistake
The big truck 59AB oil pans have a section of the pan that unbolts to make it easier to remove the 11in. pressure plate. I don't know if the flywheel will come out the same way. Walt

Ha ha! I feel better now! however, once years ago I worked at a friends quick oil change place. while changing the oil on a very pretty girls Ford Probe, she was talking to me and I became so distracted that I forgot to put the drain plug back in, I didn't realize it till I had put the third quart in and stepped over to the bench for the fourth and slipped in the oil all over the floor. I felt stupid! |

Re: I just made a dumb mistake
I've done the oil plug oopsie-poopsie...
Not enough years ago to feel so darn cool... I did not have a girl to blame either. I only lost one quart. Just a little tap to remind me to be humble. Karl |

Re: I just made a dumb mistake
The 59 block I have in my car came with pan on, but flywheel separate. I was thankful after removing pan and finding the oil pump had no pickup tube/screen. The engine was rebuilt then changed hands and somewhere along the way someone borrowed that piece.

Kind of like forgetting to install the throw out bearing. You only forget once.

Re: I just made a dumb mistake
I have a two-piece pan on a '36 LB engine. No problem removing the flywheel without having to deal with the pan removal. An additional bonus with the two piece pan makes it "somewhat" easier to remove the pan with the engine still in the car. Still a nasty job

Re: I just made a dumb mistake
We've all done it ! As a kid I was boasting how I could change a head gasket on a Ford Cortina in 90 minutes.
I did but guess what ? When I went to pull the choke knob it was stuck. The end of the cable was securely trapped between the head and the block....... |

Re: I just made a dumb mistake
I put a new fuel pump on my 41 without putting the push rod in. Couldn't figure out why I wasn't gettin' gas. Duhh! Thing is I did it 2 different times.

Re: I just made a dumb mistake
I am trying to get the oil pressure up in a 59A I have by messing with the pumps and the lifter valley pressure relief. Accordingly, I decided to keep my options open for possibly installing an 8BA pump. Using a pan gasket from Best Gasket, it occurred to me that I might make it reusable by applying grease to seal it up like we do on the manifold gaskets. It seems to work well. So, that might be something to consider for future mods or mess ups.

Re: I just made a dumb mistake
If that's the worst thing you do wrong, you will be doing a lot better than most of us. I twisted a flexible oil line inside the oil pan on a full flow oil filter system, completely stopping oil flow. This was on a newly rebuilt engine that had to be removed from the car and partially dismantled to fix the problem. Talk about making a grown man cry. This nearly made me want to become a stamp collector

Re: I just made a dumb mistake
During our stock car days we had to pull the pan on occasion to check the bearings, thus pulling the pan. Using permatex to the block and grease on the pan, meant we didn't ruin the gasket when pulling the pan.. I still do this, force of habit.
