Default 1940 sedan headliner bows

7 bows does it matter which way they are installed? Numbers567 look to go in a slot? The bows are all numbered, do the numbers go passenger or driver side. Not sure of correct install everything came in boxes. Thank you. Jason

The numbers matter according to the width of the roof, I will look at a sedan that I have with no headliner and check the numbers and sequence. I'll get back to you.

Yes, most of the roofs were tapered/openings.

Trial fit and trow a taught bed sheet over the roof to see what looks odd.

Do you have your chicken wire, burlap and cotton underlay ready waiting and willing to go?

Now is not a time to skip or pass up on the details that will support the underpinning of your vinyl roof (think about the weight of rain/snow and/or about sun/heat stretching and con-caving the roof...)
Don't skip the details
.
1940 is solid steel roof, no vinyl, burlap, chicken wire.

You must be talking 40 Tudor. The front bow is obvious with the bend at the ends then comes a progression of numbered bows to the rear. The last two wire bows (actually 4) between the rear light and the quarter window are easily made of #8 wire if any are missing. Those rear most wire bows go into slots. Don't expect a bow for every screw hole. I know that my coupe skipped one or two. Have fun when you get the numbers. Fred A

I'm going off memory here.....but I believe the number stamps were on the right (passenger) side of the car. There are no slots for them to slip into on the sides, only screws to hold them in place. The first one, number one starts in front at the windshield and it is the only one to have a "tab" to help support the center. I can take pictures of mine if they will help you, I will pull one of mine to check which side has the numbers.

Thank you for all your help. Already insulated inside of roof. Tight fit above the bows. Always modification required.

I checked a 40 2dr sedan I have in my shop with no material in the headliner but the bows are intact and appear never to have been removed. The numbering system is straight forward, no 1 is the first and the narrowest, followed by 2 through 7. The first bow has a bend near where it is fastened. The bend is kind of a dog leg, think of it this way so you put in the right direction....the way it's bent it would bend the same way if it was a human knee facing to the front of the car. The other bows don't seem to matter as far as direction goes.
When I removed one end of the bows to look for numbers, some were on the right and some on the left. Only one side of the bows had the numbers and they started with 01, 02, 03 ect. One bow was a miss stamp and all I could see was part of the stamped number.
On sedans there is no wire from the quarter window to the the back window, that is a feature unique to coupe bodies. Hope this helps.
