Default Early vs. late '31 gas tank

Can somebody please explain the difference to me? I'm going to Hershey this year again and need a late '31 tank and just don't know the difference. Yes, I have the late '31 indented firewall.

thanks,

Andy

The link will take you to Steve's study on 30-31 gas tanks.

The biggest clue would be the lack of a steering column support on the tank itself for the "late '31"

and a long tube exiting the bottom of the tank that leads to the firewall.

I wanted to buy a late 31 fuel tank, last year at Hershey. I scouted all of the fields and found 7 of the late 31 type. Several of the tanks however were pure rusted out junk - but several were decent tanks and I bought the one that looked best to me. I suggest you have a small flashlight so that you can see into the tank center chamber - I use the type of flashlight with the a small LED bulb on the end of a flex cord about 6 inches long back to the battery -- it let me put the light source down into the top of the tank and get a very good look at the middle chamber. I was looking for evidence of the original terne coating and not rust or pitting.
