weak horns on 51 ford sedan
Any one have weak horn problems? Mine were always strong on my 51Ford sedan but they went weak after long storage. What is the best way to analyze the problem, I already put in a new relay and plan to add another ground wire as the next step, I have been cautioned not to spray oil into the trumpets so don't know what to do next, any suggestions would be appreciated. By the way, they are mounted under the hood on a long bracket. Thanks in advance, Barry

Re: weak horns on 51 ford sedan
Clean up the wiring bullet connectors in the horn circuit. Clean up and tighten the horn mounting bracket and bolts....

Re: weak horns on 51 ford sedan
The horn caps can be removed. The vibrator coil points can be inspected for condition. They can be cleaned if necessary. Adjusting them can be tricky but just cleaning them should be sufficient. Grounding of all electrical components is important. If the crusties creep in then they need to be cleaned at all mounting locations, the battery ground strap included. Even bad connections in the frontal sheet metal and frame to engine can make things problematic for frontal lighting and the horns.
Horns take a good amount of amperage to function properly even if the connections are very good. If any connections in the circuit are questionable then they should be checked & cleaned if necessary. Bad connections rob amps and make the function weak. With only a 6-volt system this is very important. |

Re: weak horns on 51 ford sedan
I had the exact same problem with the horns on my '51 after a period in storage. Mine turned out to be dirty/corroded connections as well.
