What price guides are the most accurate for vintage car values?

Particularly in the '32 - '40 range.

Are the NADA guides fairly accurate.

I know an item is worth whatever the market will bear, but I'm looking for something relatively accurate.

You might want to go to hagerty.com to check out the value of your car.

Already tried them. Hagerty stops at 1946, at least their on-line tool does..

Anyone else have any suggestions?

You could check out the completed listings on Ebay and just see what the ones that sold finally went for.

I don't think any of the "guides" are accurate, they (guides) take into account BJ auctions/etc...tis why the "guy down the road" wno't sell his rusted out '39 for less that 25K, because "just seen one sell for...."

For me, I look at Ebay for pricing, evaluate sold auctions...figuring the majority are bought sight unseen, you can add a bit-assuming the vehicle in question is the same/similar shape- if you're selling/buying locally, well, assuming a "nice car" and not a project car, seems Ebay has the right buyers for project/needs work/etc vehicles.

Just how I "value" many things when looking to sell or buy.

In my opinion, the NADA Classic/Antique Car listing is way out of line with reality. Cars over priced.

Go to "searchtempest.com", type in what you're looking for and the mile radius of search. Watch it for several months and you'll get a feel for what cars go for in your area.

Most guides are developed depending on condition. The problem now days is the high cost of restoration for those that decide to pay for it. I also believe a lot depends on the current prices of new cars and what folks are willing to pay for them.

Most of the cars I see advertized that have a fairly decent "appearance" of being restored or at least in a good state of preservation, are about $10K above what most collectors really want to pay for them. These can be seen in the adds by the antique auto brokers who want to make that $10K profit on all the inventory they have.

What do guys think of Hemmings prices? To me, some seem reasonable and inline with other stuff I read but, some seem as nuts as auction listings.... Mark

Years ago, I placed an add in Hemmings to sell my 40 coupe at what I thought was a market price. I got calls from dealers offering a lot less. Three months later I got a call from a guy who just read my ad from a friend's old Hemmings. He offered me a price about half way between dealer offers and my listing. Does it surprise anyone that I took his offer? As a previous responder said, it is better to look at sold ads that are not in auctions (as your expenses really go up) than in asking prices. And sell prices in Winter are a lot less than sell prices in spring.
