Stock Flathead, Stock Fan
Hello...Can anyone give me an idea of where the center of the stock fan (mounted on the crank) matches up to a stock radiator for a 1940 (car or truck)? In other words, does it cool the "lower" 1/3 of the radiator, upper 1/3???? What is the fan blade size of a stock fan?
The reason I ask is because I can't seem to figure out my fan setup of my 8ba in my '40 pickup. Any and all help/advice/pictures is greatly appreciated. Thanks |

Re: Stock Flathead, Stock Fan
the center of the fan is the hole in the radiator that the hand crank fits through.

Re: Stock Flathead, Stock Fan
Can anyone describe the fan for me? How many blades? How long from center are each blade? Any info would be great.
If I were running a stock engine, stock crank fan setup, it seems to me that the fan would sit really really low. Is that typical? See pic (even though this is a 8ba in a 40) In my parts book I show a 6 blade, 16 3/4" fan - 91A 8600....IS THIS CORRECT? CAN ANYONE CONFIRM? Thanks |

Re: Stock Flathead, Stock Fan
The crank mounted fan is kind of low on the rad. Six blades sounds right.

NOT 4
The correct fan blade for a 1940 has 6 blades. |

40 P/U,
6 blade, sits low, crank pulley and fan mount all one piece, If this is a driver I might suggest a Walker fan shroud. I drive a '41 1/2 ton and found the shroud helped cool things in traffic. It helps channel the air the fan pulls thru the radiator. Charlie ny |

Re: Stock Flathead, Stock Fan
40 PU,
I just noticed you are running an 8ba. This is a challenge since the 8ba water pump pulleys hang out further to clear the distributor on the right front. I'm running an 8ba in my '41 and had to rework the stock crank pulley to get the belt to line up and place the fan where it belonged.....it can be done. If you wish call or email me off site so I don't get too wordy here. Charlie ny 716 662 9159 |

Re: Stock Flathead, Stock Fan
And yes, it is positioned behind the lower part of the radiator. The fan shaft lines up with the crank hole, as previously mentioned.

Re: Stock Flathead, Stock Fan
The reason I ask is because I can't seem to figure out my fan setup of my 8ba in my '40 pickup.
Any and all help/advice/pictures is greatly appreciated. Thanks
I once had a 1CM mercury motor in a 40 coupe I think they are similar...your fan blade on your 8ba is going to be near the top or middle not on the crankshaft like 1940......I,ve got a 51 mercury motor in the garage and it's a three blade fan....although the 8ba's around that vintage may have had more blades especially if it were a truck.....one way to find out is look at the crank pulley......did it have a wide fan belt or narrow groove for passenger car? Some of the early ford pu had fan scrouds your may not have....as long as you are getting adequate air ventilation and your fan blade is close to the radiator you should have adequate cooling...hope this helps Gump |
