Default '41 slot in center grill??

is the 41 intended to have an optional hand crank start option? The hole in the center of the grill suggests a crank handle could be inserted there. I don't see where the connection would be made to the engine though.

Yes, the hole is for a hand crank. 1941 was the last year for them. The connection is on the front of the engine at the crankshaft pulley. I don't have a crank for my '41,but that's how it works.

the radiator has an opening to allow the crank to pass through to connect with the dog on the crank. When I bought my 41 the radiator did not have the opening.

The 1942 has a solid core radiator. No opening for a crank to be inserted. I believe the other years had a solid core radiator as well.

I just checked my engine which is an 8BA in the 41. The crank is lower than the hole in the radiator. Now to figure out if the radiator is incorrect as well.

My '41 has a split radiator. The split goes down to where the crank is inserted to crank the engine. There it has a square hole for the crank to pass through. Not sure why your
crank hole does not line up.

Both my 46s have the crank hole and a stabilizer or protection bracket riveted to the crossmember and the radiators have an indentation in the center bottom of the rad, tanks for a crank access, I gave the crank handle to my pickup away about 40 years ago (big mistake)
I heard too many stories about kick back and was not planning on using a hand crank on anything.

I think that you will find that the radiator sits higher in the V8 '42 and '46 so the crank handle goes under the radiator. The Six cylinder Radiator is lower and has a hole in it for the crank handle.

I just checked and my model A crank is not long enough for my 41 with the split radiator or the 8ba engine did not include a crank pulley that can be cranked!

I might be wrong but I thought I'd heard that the jack handle was also used as the crank.

"Z" shaped lug wrench has a square hole in one end for an extension. The extension engages the dogs in the pulley bolt. Extensions came in several different lengths. Job Lot had new extensions for sale just a few months ago.

Ford had crank handle openings in pickups all the way up to 1952

The hand crank extensions were standard equipment through Sep 1936. After that they were considered optional but could be purchased from Ford if wanted. By 1940 they were only available to "northern" cars. After 1940 they more or less disappeared. The extensions were almost yearly specified so there were specific lengths and part numbers by year.
