Default Odd Coil Box

Can anyone identify this coil box? It seems to have T insuilators & contacts. The 5th coil may be added at some time??? Thank you

That's weird. I have no clue what the extra coil would be used for, unless it was for redundancy, or possibly to trigger a flame thrower in the exhaust pipe.

5th coil looks like it could be a master vibrator. The points would have been screwed down and inoperative on the 4 original coils. Is that a round mark above the 5th coil, possibly the original switch? What does the contact spacing look like inside the box?

That is what I was thinking when I looked at it.

Layden,
I was also kind of thinking master vibrator but the period of the box might be too early for that system. The marks above the 5th coil are from the now missing cover I think. The coils would have been smaller than normal model T coils. I will take the 5th coil off later today & see if there was a switch originally right on the box. Thank you

Master vibrators were used with any brand of coilbox, most commonly with the earlier styles whose points had become obsolete and thus hard to get repaired. What are the dimensions of the coil positions in the box ( early coils are different size than later T's) and a picture inside may be helpful.

Hello Layden,
I took the 5th coil off today & there is the outline of a round, original switch under it. Your idea of using a master vibrator when points became obsolite is sound. The
switch says "AM Coil Co. Foxboro, Mass." & has MAG & BAT positions on it. How exactly did a master vibrator system work? I am not close to the box so a picture & measurements will take a while.
